Since 1988, the Intensive English Center has been offering a program of courses and activities designed to meet the special needs and interests of people from other countries who want to study at universities in the United States or improve their English to meet personal and professional goals. The IEC faculty consists of experienced instructors holding advanced degrees. Class size is small, which makes it possible for each student to receive personal attention from the instructors.

The IEC has 4 levels: High Beginning (IEC 101); Intermediate (IEC 102); High Intermediate (IEC 103); and Advanced (IEC 104). It is recommended that students have at least 2 years of English in order to be placed in the high beginning level. The IEC classes are geared towards preparing students for academic language skills. Students receive instruction in critical thinking, essay writing, making oral presentations, note-taking, and comprehending academic lecture

The IEC and the International Admissions Office have put together a workshop series designed for conditional and prospective undergraduate students who are taking IEC 104 (advanced) classes. The purpose of these pre-matriculation sessions is to help students prepare for a successful first year experience at Stony Brook University. There are presentations by the Admissions Office as well as guest speakers from pertinent campus offices followed by a question & answer period.

Students taking the summer session will have classes Monday through Thursday from approximately 9:00 a.m. until 4:00 p.m. There will be no classes on Fridays. This gives the opportunity for students to participate in optional tutoring, field trips or cultural events.
