The language school was founded in 1993 by Antonio Lamantea as "Caffè Culturale" as a place to learn Italian in a cosy, relaxed atmosphere.
In those days Caffè Italiano Club provided this special ambience by use of classrooms that seemed more like a cafe. The language centre offered a place for interesting, stimulating conversations, cultural exchange and the familiar atmosphere guaranteed that language pupils of every nation and age felt good being there.The language and culture centre grew in popularity and it wasn't long before it was awarded with state-approval.

In 2004 the Italian language centre became state-approved by the Italian Ministry of Education, University and Research. To emphasize the Italian language school's professionalism, the school was renamed and in 2004 became Piccola Universita Italiana. The name should reflect the language school's attributes.

Piccola Università Italiana - The Italian language school by the sea

The Italian language school in Southern Italy is open from March to November and is located in Tropea in the region of Calabria. Tropea is a charming, middle age coastal town with a population of about 7000.

1. Standard Italian language course

In the repertoire of our standard courses there are classic language courses that either take place as group lessons or individual lessons.
The following Italian courses are a standard feature in our course programme:

a) Conversation course
The conversation course takes 2 hours daily, 5 days a week.
This language course is only suitable for intermediate and advanced participants (B1, B2, C1 and C2).

b) Main course
The classic Italian course takes place 4 hours daily, 5 days a week.
The main course is a classic Italian language course available for all language levels.

c) Intensive course
The intensive course takes place 4 hours daily, 5 days a week in group classes + on 3 days you will have 2 lesson units of each 55 minutes as individual lessons.
The main course is a classic Italian language course available for all language levels. Particularly motivated language students tend to choose this variation from our course programme selection.

d) Individual lessons "1 to 1"
e) Individual lessons "2 to 1"

3. Italian PLUS courses

Our Italian PLUS language courses are designed to cover several fields of interest. Our language students and their friends and family members are often not only interested in the Italian language but also in sporting or cultural activities.

The following Italian PLUS courses are a standard feature in our course programme:

a) Italian language course + sport:
Italian course + sailing, Italian course + surfing, Italian course + diving, Italian course + mountain biking

b) Italian language course + art:
Italian course + painting (Oil colours, water colours, pottery painting), Italian course + music courses

4. Special programmes

Our special programmes are designed for target groups for whom we try to make something special out of a „simple" Italian course. These course are designed for people who look for that special touch in their culture holiday.

The following special Italian courses are a standard feature in our course programme:

a) L'Italiano Navigando (Italian course and sailing trip)
b) Active Silver language course (Italian language course especially for seniors)

Intensive course: 4 weeks course C (80 hours of group lessons + 24 individual lessons)

Individual lessons

Individual lessons at our Italian language school can be booked solely or as a supplement to an existing Italian language course.

Lesson times:
Italian private lessons can take place Monday to Friday from 9 a.m to 1 p.m and from 4 p.m to 8 p.m. One lesson unit is 55 minutes.

Lesson content:
The course is customised according to your wishes, either in general, everyday Italian or in subject-specific terms. Lesson content, topic of the courses or any other special requirements must however be agreed upon before your arrival.
