The International Language Institute has implemented a 11-level
curriculum aligned with the standards of the Common European Framework
of Reference (CEFR). ILI has also adopted an online placement test
aligned with these same standards. It is our way of ensuring that
students are working at and assessed according to internationally
recognized standards.

What are the classes like at ILI and how are they scheduled?

Our full-time schedule is as follows:

8:30-11:50: Monday-Friday: We call this 'morning
class'. These classes are divided into 11 levels. You will be placed in
the best level for you. This class includes all aspects of learning
English: grammar, listening, reading, writing, speaking, vocabulary,
pronunciation 1:00-3:15: Monday-Thursday: For skills class
you are placed at the appropriate level and work primarily on reading,
writing, and listening. 3:30-4:30: Monday-Thursday: This is an optional
time period where full-time students are permitted to use our Self-study
centre. We have computers for students to work on and a teacher
available to answer questions and help with homework. 3:30-5:30: Monday-Thursday: Enhanced classes

IELTS, the International English Language Testing System, is designed
to assess the language ability of candidates who need to study or work
where English is the language of communication. IELTS is jointly managed
by University of Cambridge ESOL Examinations (Cambridge ESOL), British
Council and IDP:IELTS Australia.

IELTS conforms to the highest international standards of language
assessment. It covers the four language skills: Listening, Reading,
Writing and Speaking. All candidates take the same Listening and
Speaking Modules.

If you are planning to undertake academic study, it is recommended that you sit for the Academic Reading and Writing Modules.

If you are planning to undertake non-academic training or apply for
immigration into Canada or some other countries, it is recommended that
you sit for the General Training Reading and Writing Modules.

It is the responsibility of the candidate to determine which version, Academic or General Training, must be taken.

ILI offers a university pathway program (University Preparatory
Program, also called UP-English) that leads academically qualified
students to direct admission at the undergraduate level at one of ILI's
associate universities without the need for an additional IELTS or TOEFL
score.

ILI’s UP Program provides an excellent foundation and prepares
international students for the challenges they will encounter at
university.  The UP Program will focus on taking lecture notes, making
formal presentations (in class presentations and pronunciation
practices), evaluating websites and resources, using a university
library, preparing outlines, narrowing topics, preparing essays,
documenting source materials, understanding plagiarism, managing time,
participating in class, and working in teams, and how to approach
professors for help.

To be eligible for admission to ILI’s UP Program, a student must meet one of the following three criteria:

Must have completed ILI’s Level 600 (B2) course Must have passed an ILI Challenge TestMust provide an official IELTS score of 6.0 (must have a minimum
reading and writing band score 6.0, minimum for all other band scores
5.5) or an ibt TOEFL score of 80.

In ILI’s experience, students are best prepared for the demands of
university when they move up through ILI’s General English program and
then enter ILI’s University Preparatory Program. 

Successful completion of UP-English satisfies the English admission
requirements at most universities in Atlantic Canada.  Consult the
university of your choice to confirm its English language admission
requirements. (Note: some graduate level programs may still require an
official IELTS score).

The four-week Cambridge CELTA course is very intensive and requires a full-time commitment.


In addition to the 9:00 to 5:00 workdays at English Canada (EC), you
will need most evenings and at least one day on weekends working
independently on lesson planning and course assignments. The course is
demanding and challenging therefore employment during the course and
long commutes are strongly discouraged. 100% attendance is required and a
clear schedule for the month is recommended. Despite the intensive
nature and commitment required, most trainees enjoy and thrive on the
work!

As a CELTA trainee, you will be working in large, modern classrooms,
and you will have access to a quiet workspace for lesson preparation and
self-study. EC has materials for your exclusive use as a CELTA trainee,
including a variety of up-to-date books on methodology, grammar, and
activity books for use in the classroom. Additionally, you will have
access to other areas open to students at ILI such as kitchens and the
computer room.

Course Design

The CELTA course involves at least 120 contact hours between candidates and the course tutors. This includes:

InputTutorial support and consultationSupervised lesson planningSix hours of assessed teaching practice per candidate supervised by a course tutorFeedback on teaching practicePeer observation of teaching practiceSix hours of directed observation of live lessons taught by
experienced ELT professionals or four hours of observation of live
lessons plus two hours of observation of lessons on video

An additional 80 learning hours for reading, research, assignment
writing, lesson preparation and record keeping are also required.
