IELI has been on the campus of Flinders University since 1995. IELI is managed by the Community for Global Communication, Inc, a not-for-profit association. IELI staff works hard to maintain high standards of education in an atmophere which is both challenging and supportive. Some ways that IELI is different from other schools include: 90% of IELI teachers are on long-term or permanent contracts. Because the school offers them a secure position, the teachers are keen to build the school's reputation through well organized classes, original materials and individual feedback. IELI places the students separately by skill area (listening, speaking, reading, and writing) so that the students can be challenged in their strong areas and get extra support in their weak areas. IELI emphasises community-based learning which shares responsibility between students and teachers and encourages personal and intellectural development as part of the language learning experience.
