Tufts Summer English Language Programs
In addition to the rich schedule of excursions that introduce students to Boston, a strong residential life program, and ample opportunities for cultural exchange, Tufts offers an unbeatable faculty. All members of our faculty are professional English instructors with extensive experience teaching English as a second language.
Since our program attracts students around the world. It offers students an environment where English is truly their common language. We offer admission to standing programs such as English Today and the Summer Institute for International Scholars as well as individualized programs for sizeable groups.
Our English classes are taught by dedicated instructors who use their imagination and experience to maximize each student's learning potential. The Tufts English Language Programs are innovative in the way they combine classroom material with real-life experience. Class time is complemented by a host of real-world activities that help you to live the language as you learn it.

Four- and Six-Week
The English Today four- and six-week programs are designed for individuals ages 17 years or older who desire a combination of classes and activities to make the most of their summer in Boston.
Tufts faculty draw upon students' unique contributions to their classes and their own creativity. Teachers are available outside of class for individual appointments. In this way, each student receives individual attention.
Evening tutoring sessions led by Tufts English Language and International Program staff provide support for you in completing homework assignments and discovering new aspects of American culture.

Take the TOEFL Exam
Many students are interested in studying in the United States beyond one of the English Language and International Programs. As in international student, you will have to take the TOEFL Exam or demonstrate your English proficiency before you are accepted into any degree granting program in the United States.
All Tufts English Language and International Programs offer intensive classes that prepare you to take the TOEFL exam. We also offer a TOEFL strategies special interest elective for all English Today 4-week and 6-week participants.

International Scholars
For over 25 years, the Tufts Summer Institute for International Scholars has trained students to write American-style research papers and communicate effectively in a graduate school setting. Through careful analysis of writing structure, thesis development, and a widened vocabulary base, students acquire the skills and confidence necessary to fully participate in a U.S. graduate degree program. Classes are taught in a seminar environment that closely resembles the U.S. graduate school experience. When needed, the program staff can arrange evening tutoring sessions to complement this intensive academic program.
If you intend to pursue further study at a college or university, and have a minimum TOEFL score of 71 internet based (iBT)/197 computer based/530 paper based, we welcome your application to join this select group of scholars.

The Teacher Training Program under International Programs is a multi-phased module based program that will combine residential classroom based instruction in the summer with optional online training in the fall to assist participants in implementing the strategies they learned in their home institutions. TTP gives practicing and aspiring teachers of middle school to college English as a foreign language the opportunity to develop their confidence in classroom English, learn new techniques for teaching, and practice integrating literature into their teaching.
Each phase will improve the academic English of participants while reviewing essential elements of pedagogy. Lessons will model the theoretical concepts and research-based strategies being taught as well as build upon the teaching skills that each participant possesses. Each phase will provide essential resources to participants, creating a critical foundation for participants to improve their teaching ability.

High School
This program modifies the university-level English Today program for high school students ages 15 to 17 who are curious about American culture and history, Boston, and life at a university.
Learn to strengthen your listening, speaking, reading, and writing skills in a small, personalized classroom environment through interactive and engaging in-class activities. Optional twice-a-week workshop classes offer additional English language preparation opportunities.
You will also have the chance to experience Boston and its rich culture and history by participating in daily excursions off campus. In addition, each Wednesday afternoon a faculty member leads the students on a Discover America field trip, giving you the opportunity to experience a guided tour of historical and political sites in Boston. These one-of-a-kind learning experiences will give you an in-depth knowledge of American culture and history.
