Basic Japanese phrases

Japanese is spoken by over 125 million people in the world. However it is only a national language in Japan and recognized as a minority language in Angaur a state in Palau. Japanese has a writing system, which derives from Chinese, it consists of two syllabaries – hiragana and katakana, logograms (kanji) and requires the knowledge of romaji (Latin script).

Hello – こんにちは(konnichiwa)

Good morning – おはよう(ございます) – ohayou (gozaimasu)

Good evening – 今晩は / こんばんは (konbanwa)

 Good night – おやすみなさい (oyasumi nasai)

Good bye – さようなら (sayōnara)

Welcome – ようこそ (yōkoso)

How are you? – お元気ですか? (o genki desu ka)

Good, thank you. And you? – はい、元気です。あなたは? (hai, genki desu. anata wa?)

Thank you – どうもありがとう (dōmo arigatō)

You’re welcome – どういたしまして(dō itashimashite)

Good luck – ご幸運を祈ります! (gokoūn o inorimasu)

Bon voyage – よい旅行を (yoi ryokō o)

I don’t understand – わかりません (wakarimasen)

Yes/ no – はい (hai) /いいえ(Īe)

I love you – 好きです (suki desu)

Do you speak English/ Japanese? – 英語はできますか (Eigo wa dekimasu ka?) / 日本語はできますか (Nihongo wa dekimasu ka?)

Yes, a little – はい、話します (Hai, hanashimasu)

Please –ください (kudasai)

I miss you – 寂しい です (sabishī desu)

Have a nice day – 良い一日を (Yoi ichinichi o)

What’s your name? – お名前はなんですか? (o-namae wa nan desu ka)

My name is … –  …です (… desu)

Nice to meet you –  初めまして (hajimemashite)

Help! – 助けて! (tasukete!)
