The IELP is part of Portland State University, a community-oriented urban university with a diverse student and teacher population. The IELP offers you full immersion and integration into PSU while you improve your English skills.
Being part of a large university allows you to take advantage of campus resources. PSU is located in the heart of Portland, a beautiful, clean, and safe place to study and experience American culture. The IELP offers intensive instruction in various areas of English language preparation Your learning is supported by IELP Resources, such as The IELP Learning Center, the IELP Conversation Partner Program, and the IELP Tutors and Advisors. Our IELP Student Life Office organizes activities outside the classroom that help you make great friends and life-long connections with people.
If you are an admitted PSU student without a TOEFL or IELTS score, then the IELP is your pathway program into PSU. While studying in the IELP, you will be fully immersed in campus life while improving your English skills and preparing yourself for academic success. Once you’ve reached the advanced level, you have the opportunity to take one or two advisor-approved PSU classes before graduating from the IELP. This allows for a smooth transition into becoming a PSU student.

Pre-Entry
The Pre-Entry Program prepares students with limited English ability for the Foundational English classes. Pre-Entry students receive extra tutoring support and structure to help them develop their basic English skills. After successfully passing all of their Pre-Entry Program courses, students enter the Foundational English Program. (Note: Students must pass the Pre-Entry Program within two terms.)
Foundational
Students take a placement test to determine their level. All beginner through intermediate (Levels 1-3) students take IELP’s Foundational English courses. These courses are designed to help students build a strong foundation in written and oral communication. Students will have many opportunities to practice their English skills to enhance their language learning experience.

Undergraduate Preparation
Students take a placement test to determine their level. If a student is placed in levels 4-5, they have the option of choosing the Ungergraduate Preperation Track. This track helps intermediate to advanced (levels 4-5) students prepare for success in an American university. Students can earn up to 24 college credits and apply them as general elective credits toward an undergraduate degree at PSU.
Graduate Preparation
Students take a placement test to determine their level. If a student is placed in levels 4-5, they have the option of choosing the Graduate Preperation Track.This graduate academic preparation track helps students gain the advanced academic English skills they need to succeed in master’s or doctoral studies at PSU or at another American university.

Summer Communication and Culture Program
The Communication and Culture program is for students who want to learn about American culture, develop their conversation skills, and become more confident in communicating in English. The Communication and Culture Program is a comprehensive program with five hours of instruction each day.
Summer Academic English Program (8 week program)
This program is for students who want to improve their academic English language skills. Students will receive intensive instruction for 8 weeks during summer term. This is identical to our regular academic year program. Students can participate in the Summer Academic English Program only or they can decide to stay and finish all levels. Continuing students need to extend their immigration documents.
