Learning languages using music

Music is a part of our everyday life. We listen to it in the morning, on our way to school, during work, and when we train at the gym. It can complement a great dinner, get a party started and help us when we feel sad. It can also be helpful when learning a foreign language!

Why?

Learning languages through music is a great way to make it a fun process. When you are tired of reading grammar rules and doing exercises, it’s a great idea to add some fun activities into language learning. Listening to music can be inspiring and will show you another side of a foreign language.  Like show you a part of a country’s culture. This can take language learning to another level. Listening to music will help you learn new vocabulary and useful phrases. Singing along will improve your pronunciation. Be careful – some artists use slang words and the grammar may not always be correct. In music grammar is often adjusted in order to form rhymes etc.  So music should not be your main and only resource to learn languages but it definitely can be a way to make language learning fun!

How?

Start with research and find the most popular artists singing in the language you want to learn. Ideally the music genre will also suit your taste.  Nowadays there is so much music to choose from that you should not have a problem.

Once you decide on a couple of artists or bands buy their albums or listen to their songs on YouTube. If you are listening on YouTube you might be able to find a version with lyrics. This will make it easier for you to learn new vocabulary, including the spelling. After mastering this part you can sing along and work on your pronunciation.

If you want to try the traditional way and buy an album – look for lyrics online, they can also be available on the website of the artist or in the album booklet. Lyrics found online are usually written by fans so beware of small mistakes. Proceed as above, learn the lyrics and try to sing along. Singing can help you with pronunciation and accent in a foreign language, because when you sing you imitate the sounds sang by a native speaker (depending on the artist you choose).

An additional benefit is that music stimulates memory. Have you ever noticed how sometimes you can’t get some lyrics out of your head, or how easily you remember them? Use this to your advantage and master new vocabulary in a foreign language with ease.

Don’t wait any longer and add some fun to your learning process by listening to music!
