ELTA is primarily a school of Spoken English: at ELTA two hours per day are devoted to Spoken English with the Callan Method and two hours are devoted to General English (including exam preparation). The Intensive Course consists of an additional 2 private classes per week, focusing on the particular needs of that student. ELTA is the only Callan Method school in Ireland that is recognised by Quality and Qualifications Ireland, a State agency for education, and was one of the first Callan Method schools in the world to be accredited by the Callan Method Organisation. ELTA is also a Teacher Training School for Non-Native Speakers of English. Our TESOL course focuses on: Cambridge TESOL qualifications, Spoken English, Pronunciation and Teaching Young Learners. It is a part time course and takes place over a 12-week period.

General English refers to the acquisition of English so as to understand and be understood in daily life, in situations ranging from very simple to very complex. This is achieved through both task-based learning such as role play, and written work, simulating real life situations.
In an elementary class role play would usually include such tasks as introducing oneself, shopping for everyday items and understanding public announcements in an airport.
Tasks at intermediate level might include preparing and presenting your CV, interviewing or being interviewed for a job and writing letters and emails within both a formal and informal context.
Advanced level speaking tasks could involve negotiating a pay rise or mediating in a dispute. Written tasks will range across a broad spectrum from, for example, the descriptive narrative used in advertising copy to the terminology in a technical manual to the collocations used in a discursive essay. This task-based learning is accompanied by the lexis and grammar underpinning all of the learned tasks. So for example, the elementary student role playing a conversation at a party where she introduces herself and talks about her job, will need to use the present simple and the present continuous. Beforehand, in the theoretical part of the lesson she will have learned these forms.

The IELTS exam is one of the most widely recognized English language proficiency exams in the world – it is recognized in every country in the world as proof of a student’s fluency in English. A high score in the IELTS exam shows employers and colleges that the student has a high, almost native-speaker level of English, so the IELTS course is an ideal course for students with a good command of English language and grammar who want to have proof of their proficiency.
This is also why the Academic IELTS exam is the exam normally demanded by universities and other third level institutions in English speaking countries around the world from non-native English speakers who want to study there. Each student taking the IELTS exam receives a grade out of a maximum of 9. Different colleges and universities set different minimum ‘band’ scores for students who want to study there, so the grade you need to get may vary, but most universities set a minimum ‘band’ score of 6.5.
The exam itself is divided into four parts, which evaluate the student’s four language skills: Listening, Reading, Writing and Speaking. The Reading and Listening tasks are taken from academic texts and lectures, while the Writing and Speaking tasks are also focused on academic topics.

TESOL (Teaching English to Speakers of Other Languages) at ELTA is a Teacher Training Course for Non-Native Speakers of English. Currently this course takes place over a twelve-week period, for three hours twice per week, i.e. 6 hours per week, and there are three additional practice hours. It is a 75-hour course.
The exit exam for this course is the TKT (Teaching Knowledge Test), a professional teaching qualification awarded by the University of Cambridge CELA (Cambridge English Language Assessment). The TKT is composed of three core modules. Our trainees are prepared for these modules and are required to sit this exam at the end of their course. Trainees also have the option of taking the TKY YL (Young Learners). This is an additional component of the TKT examination, and is relevant to those who wish to specialize in teaching children.
