The English Language Institute (ELI) exists to meet the language-learning needs of non-native English speakers through superior English language training. It also exists to provide the UAB community with top-notch training options, both for current and future students and employees. Additionally, the ELI exists to serve as a cross-cultural training resource for Americans and internationals in the Birmingham area. Part-time and full-time English language courses are offered through our institute. As a special service to local companies, classes and training are available on site.

The Intensive English Program at the UAB English Language Institute (ELI) offers intensive English language instruction to non-native English speakers. The program is designed to prepare students for university coursework, but it also will enhance the use of English in the workplace or help improve general English skills.
The IEP at the ELI offers quality instruction, small classes, and ample opportunity to practice the skills learned in the classroom. In particular, the IEP is designed to prepare students for success in UAB’s numerous undergraduate, graduate, and professional degree programs. The IEP also helps full-time students with orientation to life at UAB and in Birmingham.

Business Listening and Speaking
Focus on the language of business in this course for students with a high-intermediate English level. Actively participate in improving your oral communication skills through focusing on speaking and listening skills such as:
- Negotiating and participating in meetings
- Specialized business vocabulary and idioms
- Expressing opinions, suggestions, agreement and disagreement
- Telephone conversations for business
