Sobre Capilano College EAP Department

The EAP Department at Capilano University offers a variety of courses at six levels (EAP 050 to EAP 100/101) from intermediate to academic English preparatory levels. The courses focus on all skills — speaking and listening, reading and vocabulary, and grammar and writing.

Mission Statement
The mission of the English for Academic Purposes Program is to train second-language learners of English with the necessary linguistic, academic, and cultural abilities for success at Capilano University or other post-secondary institutions.

Basic Course Information

EAP 050, EAP 060, EAP 070 and EAP 080 Levels

At the EAP 050, EAP 060, EAP 070 and EAP 080 levels, students study English for a total of 20 hours per week. Courses are generally scheduled Monday through Thursday, but some courses may be scheduled on Fridays. All courses are 15 weeks long and are usually available in the Fall, Spring, and Summer terms. Students must acheive a B average (73%) to move from one level to the next.

The EAP 050, EAP 060, EAP 070 and EAP 080 courses include:

Grammar/Writing: 8 hours per week
Reading/Vocabulary: 8 hours per week
Listening/Speaking: 4 hours per week
Total: 20 hours of EAP classes per week

EAP 090 Level

At the EAP 090 level, students study English for a total of 16 hours per week. Courses are generally scheduled Monday through Thursday, but some courses may be scheduled on Fridays. All courses are 15 weeks long and are usually available in the Fall, Spring, and Summer terms. Students must acheive a B average (73%) to move to the EAP 100/101 level. While taking EAP 090, students may also register in one Capilano University academic course in either Business or Arts & Sciences.

The EAP 090 course includes:

Grammar/Writing/Listening: 8 hours per week
Reading/Vocabulary/Speaking: 8 hours per week
Total: 16 hours of EAP classes per week

EAP 100/101 Level
At the EAP 100/101 level, students usually study English for a total of 8 hours per week. Courses are generally scheduled Monday through Thursday, three days per week. In the Fall and Spring term, courses are 15 weeks long. In the Summer term, EAP 100/101 is an 8-week-long course in May/June only. Students must acheive a B+ average (77%) to exit the EAP Program and take full academic courses. While taking EAP 100/101 in the Fall or Spring terms, students may also register in one or two Capilano University academic courses in either Business or Arts & Sciences.

Please note: Students usually take EAP 100 and EAP 101 concurrently.

The EAP 100 course includes:

Grammar/Writing/Listening: 4 hours per week
The EAP 101 course includes:

Grammar/Speaking/Pronunciation/Vocabulary: 4 hours per week
Total: 8 hours of EAP classes per week

English for Academic Purposes Admission Requirements

BC Secondary School Graduation (Grade 12) or equivalent OR Mature Student status.
The following is required: a valid English Language Assessment (ELA) test score of a minimum of 32 OR the EAP Placement Test.

Capilano Academic English Preparation ("EAP-Plus")
At Capilano University, students can begin their academic studies while completing their EAP studies.

At the EAP 090 level, students may choose to take one Capilano academic course in either Business or Arts & Sciences in addition to their EAP 090 course.
At the EAP 100/101 level, students may choose to take one or two Capilano academic courses in either Business or Arts & Sciences in addition to their EAP 100/101 course.
Students who complete the full-time intensive program at the EAP 100/101 level with a B+ (77%) or higher will satisfy the Capilano University English Language requirement for academic studies (University Transfer/School of Business) with no TOEFL score required.
