Established in 1977, the Intensive English Program (IEP) is a year-round, on-campus academic program designed to ensure that international students acquire the English-language and university-level learning skills needed for success in the undergraduate- or graduate-degree programs of their choice at CSUN or any other American college or university.
CSUN's widely recognized IEP provides an authentic university experience with on-campus classes, small class sizes (typically 15 to 20 students), and state-of-the-art language laboratories.
The IEP not only prepares students for academic success through its well-structured curriculum and highly qualified instructors but also offers the following benefits:
Conditional (pre-approved) admission to CSUN programs prior to students meeting the English-language proficiency admission requirements of those institutions;
Preparation for the Test of English as a Foreign Language (TOEFL) and the International English Language Testing System (IELTS) examinations;
TOEFL waivers, which enable IEP students who have "pre-approved conditional admission" status and have completed the IEP's University Bridge Program Level A (undergraduate) or Level B (graduate) with a minimum cumulative grade-point-average (GPA) of 3.0 to enter approved degree programs of their choice at CSUN – or a partnering institution – without taking the TOEFL;
After-class tutoring and activity classes, free of charge; and –
For students enrolled in Academic Skills 3 or higher – the option of substituting university-credit courses for one or more IEP classes. This feature enables eligible students to begin working on their undergraduate or graduate degrees at CSUN while still enrolled in the IEP.

Activity Classes
These classes provide students with opportunities to study subjects of interest and practice their English in areas such as American Films and Culture, TOEFL preparation, Writing for the IEP newspaper, and more. These classes are taught primarily by CSUN graduate students who are finishing degrees in appropriate fields. Course duration is five weeks. Students may sign up for multiple classes.

Test Preparation
Students enrolled in the IEP are required to take one afternoon class, five hours per week. Those who plan to take the TOEFL iBT or the IELTS exam may enroll in a test prep course as required core and course. These classes are held Monday through Thursday from 1-2:05 p.m.

IEP Courses
The Intensive English Program is designed to assist non-native speakers of English in improving their academic English-language skills. Students are required to attend 20 hours of instruction per week. Core 1 and 2 classes provide instruction in all language skill areas: reading, writing, speaking, listening, public speaking and presentation, and academic research and writing (15 hours per week). Core 3 Courses are offered in areas such as TOEFL and IELTS Preparation, Grammar, Conversation, and Vocabulary. (5 hours per week)
IEP Support Programs
In addition to regular IEP classes, which are held from 9 a.m. to 2 p.m. daily, students can receive additional, supplemental instruction after class.
Test Preparation

Tutoring
The Tutoring Center is a free service offered only to the currently enrolled IEP students with the primary purpose of guiding students to become independent readers, writers and speakers of English. Tutors, university students studying linguistics or a related field, facilitate student learning by providing one-on-one assistance and support in a comfortable, non-threatening atmosphere where students can express their concerns about their skills. Through questioning, modeling and discussion of various strategies and techniques, tutors will help students gain confidence in their English language abilities.
