California State University San Marcos is a public comprehensive university located in the San Diego, California region. With an enrollment of 9,000 it is a medium-size campus where students receive personal attention. CSUSM is a relatively young institution (20 years old) so it has all the latest technology and state-of-the art laboratories. CSUSM offers a wide variety of majors in Business, Science, Computer Science, and the Humanities. We also offer several graduate programs. CSUSM offers Conditional Admission to both undergraduate and graduate applicants who lack the minimum TOEFL/IELTS requirement of 61/5.5 for undergraduate and 80/6.0 for graduate admission. CSUSM also has an excellent ESL program -The American Language and Culture Institute (ALCI), which offers intensive academic preparation, TOEFL waiver to CSUSM and local community colleges, and a Semester Abroad program for students with advanced English proficiency. ALCI also offers English Teacher Training and a variety of vacation language-travel and other short-term special group programs for high school, university, and senior adult participants.

Intensive Academic Preparation Program & Conditional Admission
The Intensive Academic Preparation (IAP) prepares you for study at an American university or college. The IAP program is also useful for professionals who need better skills and an advanced level of academic English.
Completion of the IAP provides a TOEFL Waiver for graduate and undergraduate admission to California State University San Marcos (CSUSM). Conditional Admission to CSUSM is also available to qualified graduate and undergraduate students.
The IAP is a year-round program. Classes begin in the Fall, Spring, and Summer semesters. To enter this program, you must be at least 18 years old or a high-school graduate, and have basic English skills.
IAP Program Features:
Six proficiency levels
24 class hours per week

Academic courses in reading, vocabulary, academic writing, grammar, public speaking, study skills, test preparation, enrichment classes and service learning

Taking University Classes for Credit
You may take a university class for credit with American students at CSU San Marcos if you have a grade of "C" or higher in your ALCI core courses, and test into Level 105. On meeting these requirements, you may add a university class if there is available space in that class.

American Culture Experience
(Language Travel & Fun in the Sun Language Camps)
We invite you to join the American Culture Experience (ACE) for two or four weeks of fun in the sun! Enjoy the California lifestyle, beaches, sun, and surf. Visit Disneyland, Sea World, the San Diego Zoo, and other local attractions. ACE is open to escorted groups ages 15 and older, and individuals who are at least 18 years of age or have a local contact. Individuals are welcome to join on a space and date available basis.
American Culture Experience and Community Service Learning
(Language and Volunteering)
Classes on campus at California State University San Marcos. Volunteer opportunities at senior centers, libraries, schools, community gardens, food banks and more! Two to four weeks; custom programs available year-round for 15+ participants.
Custom programs are available during spring, summer, and fall for groups.

The Teaching English as a Second/Foreign Language (TESL/TEFL) Certificate is for those with minimal or no English language teaching experience who are interested in teaching English abroad (EFL) or in the United States (ESL). This 120-hour certificate program focuses on best practices in methods, materials, and techniques used to teach English as a second/foreign language.
The TEFL Certificate for International Teachers of English is designed for groups of teachers with previous English language teaching experience or students in English teacher programs in their home countries.* This 120-hour certificate program focuses on best practices in methods, materials, and techniques used to teach English as a second/foreign language.
