Business English – negotiations

Negotiation is a dialogue between two or more parties (people) with the intention to reach an outcome, which is beneficial for both parties. Negotiations are a resolution of a conflict, where two parties have different and/or conflicting wants or needs.

You can negotiate to get a promotion or raise, negotiate to decide on an investment or project, negotiate with clients to make a sale.

But negotiations are a common part of our everyday life and don’t only take place in a business surrounding. We can negotiate for the price of produce at a market, negotiate the price of an apartment, and negotiate with our partner where we want to spend the holidays.

The most important thing about negotiations is listening to the other party and considering what they are saying as well as clearly communicating our needs and finding a common ground.
