What to do in Montpellier

The most famous place of the city is called Place de la Comédie. This place is part of the biggest pedestrian area in Europe, with the 19th century opera building and the beautiful and famous “3 Grâces” fountain, the key meeting point for people living in Montpellier.

Students love going out during the summer and going to the ice cream shop “Chez Louise” just on top of the street to choose between the 25 flavours available.

The “Place de la Comédie” is surrounded by restaurants and cafés with sunny terraces, nice little boutiques, bakeries and pastries shops where you’ll be able to buy sandwiches, and French specialities like macaroons, croissants, pains au chocolat.

The Tourist Office is located just a minute away between the Place de la Comédie and l’Esplanade, and their helpful staff will be delighted to let you know about all the treasures that are in the town and to be seen.

The daily market is located just in front of the Tourist Office, with fresh fruits and veggies, bags, clothes.

If you carry on straight ahead, you will find the Polygone, a nice shopping mall with more than a 100 boutiques!

On the other side of the Esplanade, surrounded by sycamore trees, fountains, green spaces and food huts with terraces in the shadow, is where the “Estivales” happen during the summer (local wine tasting and concerts) and where the Christmas market is during the festive season.

The Corum – a very active and attractive place for concerts, festivals, fairs, is located down this pedestrian area, and offers a rooftop to admire the city from above.

The Rockstore is also a very famous place to listen to live music, concerts just a few steps away from the school.

Montpellier has 4 tramway lines, 36 bus lines and 51 bike stations to go around the “agglomération”. Take the line 1 to the “Beaux Arts” where many artists such as painters, musicians and students are living. There is always a small market in the morning and music in the evening.

You can also take the tramway line 3 and get off “Etang de l’Or” station then take a bus to go to one of our seaside resorts like Palavas les Flots or Carnon! You’ll enjoy these touristic beaches with their marinas.

If you prefer quiet and wilder places, you should take the tramway line n°4 to “Garcia Llorca” and the bus n°32 or rent a city bike to go to Villeneuve les Maguelones, one of the best preserved beaches on the coastline to admire flamingos and lots of other bird species.
