How to include languages in your everyday life

You could learn new words, repeat grammar explanations or visit a language course once a week. But mostly that’s not enough. You have to live your learning language. But how could you include your foreign language in your everyday life?

It is easier than you think!

5 tips to include your learning language in your everyday life

At first, don’t forget: Everyday life could always be time to learn!

1) Watch a film!

The easiest way to hear the foreign language is to watch a film. The best thing is that you have more possibilites:

A) You can watch the film “only” in the language you learn – without subtitles.
B) You can watch the film in the language you learn, but with subtitles.

The important thing is that you set the subtitles also in your learning language. So you can listen to the spoken language and read it at the same time!

If you think your language skills aren’t the best ones, you can start with films you already know. (Or with films for children.)

2) Read a book!

You can also read books – at home, in your favourite café or in the park (when it is sunny). For the beginning short stories or articles in a newspaper or magazine are good possibilities to read in a foreign language. When you get used to it, you could read novels or texts which are more complicated.

But choose always books you like! You will never read a book which is boring.

3) Listen to audio books!

Maybe there are time windows which you want to use to learn a foreign language. These time windows could be for example in the car, in the shower or in the kitchen. One option is to listen to music in your learning language, but another option is to listen to audio books. And don’t be afraid: You can always rewind it if you don’t understand the context.

4) Look for language partners!

Language partners are a good possibilty to live the language. You could talk to them, laugh with them and get in touch with new cultures. And the best thing: You have an expert for the language you learn!

To find a language partner in your hometown you can check the newspaper, the noticeboard at university or some groups in facebook. Maybe there are some events where you can find a language partner. Another possibility is to look for a language partner all over the world. There are websites like Italki where you can search for international language learners to start a “tandem” (via skype, facebook, whatsapp or mail).

5) Change the language!

You can include your foreign language also in your everyday life when you change the language of your smartphone, your computer or your social media accounts (like facebook or twitter). At first it will be a little bit difficult, but after a few days you will be used to it!
