What is DELE?

DELE (Diplomas de Español como Lengua Extranjera – Certificate of Spanish as a foreign language) is the only official international Spanish exam attested by the Spanish Ministry of Education, Culture and Sport. The exam is organized by Instituto Cervantes and designed by Universidad de Salamanca. There are six levels of DELE exams – A1, A2, B1, B2, C1 and C2 – with the last one indicating mastery in Spanish. This exam requires registration at an appropriate examination centre, the fee varies between 100 and 210 EURO depending on the level and the country you take it in.

 

Who is it for?

The DELE exam is for anyone who wants to verify their knowledge and competence of the Spanish language and wants to be certified. Obtaining different levels of the DELE exam certify different skills in the language. Diplomas de Español como Lengua Extranjera is internationally recognized among private and public educational, business and other institutions. So you can use your DELE certificate to help you get to university as well as use it in your job application.

 

DELE levels

 

Level A1

Passing the exam at this level certifies that students are able to use elementary language in everyday situations. It’s aimed at students at the beginning of the journey with the Spanish language. The exam consists of two groups of tests – reading and writing skills and speaking skills. The first one has two sections: reading comprehension (45 min) and written expression and interaction (25 min). The second group also has two sections: listening comprehension (20 min) and oral expression and interaction (15 min). The maximum score of the exam is 100 points, you need to get at least 30 points for each group of tests to pass. The final grade is fail or pass and doesn’t specify how well or bad you did in detail.

 

Level A2

Passing the exam at this level certifies that students are able to understand and use common phrases and vocabulary related to topics they have an experience in or knowledge about. This level requires a more advanced knowledge of the Spanish language. The exam consists of two groups of tests – reading and writing skills and speaking skills. The first one has two sections: reading comprehension (60 min) and written expression and interaction (50 min). The second group also has two sections: listening comprehension (35 min) and oral expression and interaction (15 min). The maximum score of the exam is 100 points, you need to get at least 30 points for each group of tests to pass. The final grade is fail or pass and doesn’t specify how well or bad you did in detail.

 

Level B1

Passing the exam at this level certifies that students are able to understand the gist of uncomplicated texts about general subjects, they can write simple texts about these subjects and can describe events, experiences and opinions and justify or explain them. The exam consists of two groups of tests. The first one includes: reading comprehension test (70 min) and written expression and interaction test (60 min). The second group includes: listening comprehension test (40 min) and oral expression and interaction test (15 min + 15 min for preparation). The maximum score of the exam is 100 points, you need to get at least 30 points for each group of tests to pass. The final grade is fail or pass and doesn’t specify how well or bad you did in detail.

 

Level B2

Passing the exam at this level certifies that students are able to understand and write detailed texts about various topics and naturally interact with native speakers. The exam consists of two groups of tests. The first one includes: reading comprehension test (70 min) and written expression and interaction test (80 min). The second group includes: listening comprehension test (40 min) and oral expression and interaction test (20 min + 20 min for preparation). The maximum score of the exam is 100 points, you need to get at least 30 points for each group of tests to pass. The final grade is fail or pass and doesn’t specify how well or bad you did in detail.

 

Level C1

Passing the exam at this level certifies a more than advanced knowledge of Spanish. Students which pass are able to communicate in Spanish fluently and with spontaneity and are able to use the language effectively for academic, professional and social purposes. DELE C1 has a different exam structure there are four tests divided into two groups (group 1: test 1 and 3; group 2: test 2 and 4) – Test 1: Reading comprehension and use of language (90 min), Test 2: Listening comprehension and use of language (50 min), Test 3: Integrated skills. Listening comprehension and written expression and interaction (80 min) and Test 4: Integrated skills. Reading comprehension and oral expression and interaction (20 min + 20 min to prepare). The maximum score of the exam is 100 points, you need to get at least 30 points for each group of tests to pass. The final grade is fail or pass and doesn’t specify how well or bad you did in detail.

 

Level C2

Passing the DELE C2 exam certifies mastery in Spanish and the most advanced level.  Students which pass are able to communicate effortlessly in Spanish and can adapt to any kind of situation using semantically and grammatically correct language. This exam consists of three tests – Test 1: Use of language, reading and listening comprehension (105 min), Test 2: Integrated skills: Listening and reading comprehension and written expression and interaction (150 min) and Test 3: Integrated skills: Reading comprehension and oral expression and interaction (20 min + 30 min to prepare). The maximum score of the exam is 100 points, you need to get at least 20 points for each of the tests to pass. The final grade is fail or pass and doesn’t specify how well or bad you did in detail.
