About American English Language School - Los Angeles

A leading English language school accredited by the CEA (Commission on English Language Accreditation) and approved by SEVP (Student and Exchange Visitor Program) located in Los Angeles, California. Learn English in LA with our ESL classes, TOEFL preparation, and English speaking classes. Are you serious about improving your English? Join a class today!

All of our classes are taught by native English speakers and are centered around having average 5-6 students in class (a maximum of 8 per teacher). This allows our classes to be conversation-oriented, requiring active participation from all students and allowing teachers to provide immediate feedback. We also help students throughout their English language school process, from school applications to receiving F-1 visas and navigating local life. Last, the affordable tuition ($500/month) at AELS provides the most reasonable and economical choice for students, as compared to other academic institutions' hefty tuition fees and medium to large class sizes.

AELS offers courses in ESL (English as a Second Language) and TOEFL (Test of English as a Foreign Language) preparation, Citizenship/Naturalization Test preparation, journal writing, book club, summer youth programs for international students, and more. Each quarter, we also host a Culture Week, where students will gain authentic speaking and listening experience through a discussion of American media and pop culture as well as personal experience garnered from guided field trips to local theaters, college campuses, local events, and museums.

The safety of our students is one of our main concerns. This is why all of our prospective teachers must get fingerprinted and obtain clearance from the California Department of Justice (DOJ) and the Federal Bureau of Investigation (FBI) before being hired. We request a background check from the DOJ which will inform us of any active arrests or convictions. This process enables us to protect our students, staff, and administration from unnecessary danger and focus on providing students with a great education!

AELS instructors are native English speakers with English-related degrees or TESOL certifications (teaching English for Speakers of Other Languages) with extensive ESL training and experience. All instructors at AELS have at least a B.A. or B.S. degree from a fully accredited four-year university. AELS instructors are patient, sincere, kind, attentive and most importantly, have a passion for teaching.

America English Language School is accredited by the CEA (Commission on English Language Accreditation) and certified by the SEVP/SEVIS (Student and Exchange Visitor Program) and BPPE (Bureau for Private Post Secondary Education). In addition, AELS is a certified TOEFL iBT testing center and issues I-20 forms for an F-1 student visa.

ESL Levels from Basic to Level 5 (20 hours/week)

The ESL program at AELS consists of 6 levels, from Basic to Level 5. The final goal of the ESL program is to be able to communicate comfortably in all areas of English, including speaking, listening, reading, and writing. Students will improve their grammar and conversational skills. They take a placement test to determine which course level they will start with, and each level takes 3 months to complete. At the end of each level, students will need to take the level test again to see how they've progressed in speaking, listening, and reading. If you have passed satisfactorily, you will move on to the next level. Once you have completed the highest level (Level 5), you will receive a certificate of completion proving that you have completed the ESL program at AELS.

Reading, Writing, Grammar

AELS conducts reading and writing activities at each level. Students will become more familiar with English sentence structure and will be able to read easily and expand their vocabulary through the level-appropriate reading passages. The writing activities will allow them to write their own sentences starting with simple sentences and progressing to formatted essays. In addition, students will learn many English idioms through this process and will be able to use complex grammar rules, which will help them to speak English accurately and more naturally.

Conversation

AELS offers a variety of thematic and contextual conversation activities to practice speaking and listening skills that are used in real life. All classes focus on conversations between instructors and students. Instructors maximize learning efficiency by giving prompt feedback through constant dialogue with the students and correction of pronunciation and word choice. Through this process, students will practice speaking confidently and gain more listening practice through constant conversation. This is only possible with a small number of students in each class, something that AELS is proud to offer.

Basic Goal: Students will begin to communicate basic needs in a variety of real-life/survival situations.

Since 2008, American English Language School has maintained an upstanding reputation of helping students reach a high level of English proficiency. As a result, we have formed special agreements called Memorandums of Understanding with accredited colleges and universities across the U.S. which allow us to set up a College Pathway Program for international students who hope to continue their education in America after completing our ESL program.

These agreements allow students who have completed Level 5 of our ESL program (the highest of 6 levels) to be accepted to these schools without taking the TOEFL® (Test of English as a Foreign Language) test. These colleges and universities may also issue a Conditional Letter of Acceptance (CLA) to students planning on attending their school upon completing our ESL program. Schools accept these Level 5 students because they recognize the completion of our ESL program to be equivalent or superior to scoring a passing grade on the TOEFL in order to transfer to their college.

Students attend American English Language School for much less money than most college ESL programs and get a more personalized and in-depth English learning experience. Enroll in our intensive English classes to improve your English more quickly, and you will be GUARANTEED admission to any college or university in our list of partner schools! Transferring to college as an international student has never been easier and stress-free!

Great School with Awesome Teachers!

I've checked out a lot of different language schools, but this was the best one of them all! The teachers really care about the students. They give you lots of chances to learn how to use English correctly because the classes are so small. I was more comfortable speaking in these small classes. I want to learn more about the Exam Prep classes next for TOEFL!

I love this school!

I came to American English language school last summer from July to September. I had lots of fun talking, talking, and talking! I never thought there will be this much conversation with the teacher and classmates. My class had only 5 students! Lucky me! The class was fun and the teacher was very good too!

Prepared me very well for college in America

For anyone who wants to quickly improve their English, this school is the best! The teachers are very helpful and friendly, and I was able to learn and improve my English speaking a lot more because my class only had 3 other students, so I got a lot of time to practice and have mistakes corrected by the teacher. I studied in their ESL program and then took a TOEFL preparation class to help me prepare for my TOEFL test so that I could attend a college in California. They gave great tips and I felt confident when taking the test, and I passed!
My English has improved so much thanks to this school. I would highly recommend this place to everyone.

A Very Different English Language School

This english school is very different from other language schools. First, not many students in class; other language schools usually have 10-15 students in class but this school has only 4-5 students in class. Sometimes, they only have 3 or 4! Second, price is very reasonable. It's only $500/month and if you pay whole year, you can get a lot of discount as well. Third, Teachers are very nice and friendly and lots of conversation with teachers. Last, they have something called Presentation every Monday and it gave me lots of confidence to speak in front of other students. I had to present what I worked on last week (they also gave me weekend homework!) before my classmates. I thought it was very helpful to gain some experience and confidence since English is my second language. If you want to improve and focus on conversation skills/speaking skills, this is the BEST place you can go in America!

Wonderful Place to Learn English

American English Language School was a great place for me to learn English. My teacher was very friendly and kind! I took the small group class and it was extremely beneficial to my English learning experience. The teacher was able to give group and individual attention to each student through a variety of class activities. Our teacher encouraged us to speak all during class and we had so much fun!

If you are looking for a place that nurtures conversational and academic English, go to American English Language School!

Best value English program

Learning English at American English Language School was a great experience. Tuition was cheaper than most schools I had seen, and they provided a lot of value for what you paid. I felt like my needs were always a concern to teachers, and since my class only had 4 other students, I was able to ask questions and practice speaking English a lot more in class.
I also really enjoyed their culture week. We visited cultural places, listened to speakers, and shared different kinds of foods. It was a great way to practice using English in the real world outside of class.
Overall, I had an amazing time at American English Language School and would recommend it to everybody.

small classes

I really enjoyed AELS! My teacher was very kind to me and helped me with my conversation. I was shy to speak first but my class helped me to feel comfortable speaking. I also saved a lot of money by transferring because the tuition is very low for the class size. I was surprised but happy by finding this language school.

The Best English School!

My time at American English Language School was amazing. I transferred to here from a large language school because AELS had a great transfer student discount and they offered small classes (I found it very difficult to learn English and practice my English in class because there were so many students at my old school). So I was able to learn English much more easily with less students in class with me, and got much more value for the money I paid. Since transferring to this school, my English improved much more quickly and I was able to speak English confidently within a few weeks.
Coming here is the best choice I could have made to improve my English, I recommend their ESL program to everybody!

Excellent English Class

I was not sure if there are only 4-5 students in class and they only cost $500/month because other language schools usually has 8-12 students in class and costs more. I tried this language school and it was true that usually average student in class are around 5 students. My class has only 4! I could talk a lot, asked a lot and my teacher was very nice. I strongly recommend this school to you. Just try and you will like it!
