SGIC has had a history of supplying quality English education to international students in Toronto and Vancouver since 1994. In 2010, SGIC opened its latest location in downtown Vancouver. We have a reputation in the community for providing the best English Diploma courses where students engage in challenging skill-based programs which augment their English proficiency in an academic or practical context.
We have been the fastest-growing ESL school since 2008, accommodating 400 students for 10 months of the year. Our strength has been our commitment to developing unique programs that meet the different language needs of our students. In addition to our ESL, Business (BEDP)and Internship programs, SGIC offers TOEFL, IELTS, Power Speaking (SSP), i-TESOL, TKT, Teaching Young Children (TYCP), Combined Internship Experience Program (CIEP), Canadian Industry Jargon Program (CIJP), IPP, EFP, CILISAT, ACTI, OPIc, and UCPP and Pathway Program with Partnerships with Canadian Colleges and Universities. Both campuses have a uniquely strict English Only Policy to encourage students to practice at every opportunity and to interact with one another.
Our Activity Coordinator organizes weekly excursions to help the students explore Toronto, Vancouver and all Canada has to offer after an intense week of studying!

General English

This course is for students aged: 16-70

Levels: Advanced, Basic, Intermediate

Class Sizes: Large, 11-20 students, Medium, 6-10 students, One-to-One, Small, 2-5 students

Weekly Hours: Relaxed 10-15 hrs/wk, General 15-25 hrs/wk, Intensive 25+ hrs/wk

Upon registration, new students do an oral and written assessment test in order to be placed in an ESL class which corresponds to their level of English. Each session is in two parts which last for 8 weeks in total. Students who obtain 70% or higher over their 8 weeks of ESL classes will be able to move on to the next level. After passing Intermediate 3, students are entitled to apply for the diploma courses.

Weekly Hours: General 15-25 hrs/wk

Students are given the opportunity to wade through important concepts and topics that have become the foundations of our modern day business world, in an intense, but concise manner. The classroom emulates a North American business environment where students are encouraged to be business conscious at all times while continuously practicing both business and English skills.

This course allows students to greatly improve their English while learning essential business skills required in a North American context. Telephone skills, negotiations, presentations, resume writing and job interview skills comprise a part of what students will learn. Business vocabulary, etiquette, and world issues are also explored and discussed.

English Pathway Programs

PPP (Pre-Pathway Program)
The PPP course is designed to emphasize the link between listening comprehension and writing pro-ficiency, and success in SGIC diploma programs, particularly UCPP. Your writing skills will improve through a review of the English tenses, sentence structure, types of sentences, paragraph structure and writing practice.

Pathway Program
UCPP is an intensive 12 week/300hour university and college preparation program open to graduates of SGIC Advanced ESL program. UCPP is designed for students planning to attend college in Toronto. This is an advanced level program and focuses on providing students with the skills necessary to succeed at the college level.

A unique course designed to push your listening & speaking skills to that of a native speaker. Classroom activities are designed to match students’ interests.Develop strategies for critical thought by delving into controversial issues. Improve use of complex language structure such as irony, problem solving and debate. Record, analyze and continuously correct your voice patterns; learn strategies to understand complex lectures. Apply the techniques while learning about Canadian culture and exploring Canadian concepts with the encouragement of articulate self-expression.

English Teacher Training

This course is for students aged: 16-70

This intensive course exposes non-native speakers of English to the foundations of teaching English as a Second Language. In addition, students of the program will heighten their own understanding of English grammar, vocabulary, pronunciation and the role of the teacher in the ESL classroom. Learner autonomy is highlighted throughout the course.

TYCP (iTESOL for Children)
This course is an intensive program designed to teach you about child development and how to encourage creativity in young children. Expect to learn a variety of songs and dances, and to experiment with a wide variety of arts and craft activities. Students will also learn about Canadian children’s culture by exploring a few popular children’s authors.
