About New York Language Center - Jackson Heights, Queens
New York Language Center offers unmatched English as a second language instruction to students of all levels, which also includes TOEFL preparation and specialized English courses. The Center was established in 1985 and quickly rose to one of the most respected and largest English language schools in the NYC area. Many of our students enrol at universities here or return to their workplace with improved English language skills. Every year, thousands of students from over 100 countries come to us to improve their English skills in our schools in Queens, Manhattan, the Bronx, the Upper West Side of Manhattan, and Midtown.
Students can enrol between the span of one week or as long as one year. We offer Semi-Intensive programs of 16 hours per week, or more intensive ESL programs of 20 hours per week.
New York Language Center pairs specialized electives in Academic Writing, Conversation, Business Writing and much more with a comprehensive integrated skills language program. To our students we also offer student activities, housing placement assistance, free internet access, and assistance with university admissions.
We are authorized under U.S. federal law to enrol (F1) non-immigrant students; in addition we are certified by the New York State Education Department. For the period December 2014 through December 2018 NYLC is accredited by the Commission on English Language Program Accreditation. Day Program
(Level 0-4)
In this integrated skills course, you will
practice speaking, listening, reading and writing at the beginner level. This course will introduce students to basic language skills and vocabulary and equip them with tools necessary to engage in basic conversations about the community, family, school and at work. You will learn the language by simulating real life situations in communicative activities. Students will be required to exhibit at least 70% comprehension of the skills assessed in the form of midterm and final exam.
(Level 5-6)
In this integrated skills program, students will practice speaking, listening, reading and writing at the Intermediate level. This program builds on acquired syntactic knowledge from levels one to four and further motivates students to hone their communicative skills and engages students with relevant texts. It also provides students with a strong pronunciation syllabus which encourages students to speak appropriately in an informal or formal setting and understand speaker’s purpose and register. Students will be required to exhibit at least
70 percent comprehension of the skills assessed in the form of midterm and

(Level 7-8)
In this integrated skills program, students will practice speaking, listening, reading and writing at the high intermediate level. In this program, students are exposed to engaging topics and stimulating texts and are provided with challenging tasks that scaffold the learning process and improve their reading and writing skills. Students will practice planning, organising, writing and editing written assignments. Moreover, students will practice extended oral production in role plays and debates and develop their fluency in the target language. Students will be required to exhibit at least 70 percent comprehension of the skills assessed in the form of midterm and
final exam.
(Level 9-10)
In this integrated skills program, students will encounter vocabulary items several times in context before it is firmly acquired. The listening tasks employ strategies familiar in authentic settings. Students are exposed to complex grammatical forms and engage in a guided practice using the new structure in writing and then practice the form in speaking. This step-by-step approach allows the students to internalize the form and meaning of the structure while they gain confidence in acquiring the nuances of the language. Students will be required to exhibit at least 70 percent comprehension of the skills assessed in the form of midterm and final exam.
Weekend and Evening Program Course Descriptions
(Level 0- 4)
This course introduces students to
some basic grammatical structures and fundamental vocabulary necessary for
daily interactions. Grammar is presented in a theoretical framework and
reinforced with examples from everyday life, as well as with controlled
interactions meant to stimulate typical situations students may encounter.
Students will be required to exhibit at least 70% comprehension of the skills
assessed in the form of midterm and final exam.
(Level 5)
This course prepares students for intermediate coursework by giving them a highly
contextualized overview of the grammar they already know, as well as an
introduction to concepts they will explore in the levels to come. Students will
do extensive reading about the lives and characters of a fictional town called
Wickham City, and the daily situations in the text will provide a setting for
discussions and opportunities to use targeted grammar. Students will be
required to show proficiency in at least 70% of course material as assessed by
a midterm and final assessment administered in the fourth and eighth weeks,
respectively.
(Level 6-7)
In this integrated skills program, students will practice speaking, listening, reading

This is a preparatory course for the Test of English for International Communication (TOEIC) which will help students improve their overall TOEIC-taking skills and TOEIC score. Concurrently, students’ English language skills in listening, reading, writing and grammar will also improve. The course is comprised of four sections: listening comprehension, reading, speaking and writing which reflect the four sections of the actual TOEIC test. Weekly oral and written assessments will gauge student’s progress and comprehension of course content.

Our Business English Program teaches the language skills necessary to do better in the workplace. Students will engage in meetings, negotiations, analysis of business problems and brainstorming of solutions, all in English. In addition students are encouraged to submit articles to our Business English Blog which allows them to write about their own area of expertise.
