Advantages of the Common European Framework of Reference for Languages

But that’s not all. Today I want to tell you the advantages of the CEFR because there are a lot.

Here are seven advantages of the CEFR:

CEFR is the short version of Common European Framework of Reference for Languages.

#1 The CEFR is a base for everyone.

This base is very important to create curriculums in European countries, but also to write educational books in different languages. In addition it is also a possibilty to compare students from different countries: A student who learned French in Germany (level B1) has the same language skills as a student who learned French in Portugal at the same level.

#2 The CEFR makes certificates possible which are valid in every European country.

There are language certificates in different languages which are valid in every European country and which could be written by everyone. The locations where you can write the exam are area-wide in Europe. So everyone has the possibility to write an exam.

This are some language certificates:

English: TOEIC, TOEFL and IELTS
French: DELF and DALF
Italian: CELI, CILS or PLIDA
Spanish: DELE
German: TestDaF

You will find also language schools which offer special preparatory courses.

#3 The focus of the CEFR is communication.

The basic skills for a good communication are very important. Therefore you have four parts in every language exam which are “writing”, “reading”, “listening” and – of course – “speaking”.

#4 It helps to overcome educational barriers.

Naturally there are different educational systems in Europe. Every country has its own. But with the aid of the CEFR these barriers could be overcome.

#5 The CEFR includes also the professional aspect.

Not only the communication in a daily life is important, but also the communication in a professional life. So every learner has the possibility to learn for example specific vocabulary in a professional context.

#6 Language learners and teachers are more independent.

Because of the transparency of the educational topics and of the qualifications both – language learner and teacher – can learn and work more independent (for example with educational books which are created with the aid of the CEFR).

#7 The CEFR respects the cultural aspects.

These cultural aspects are for example the social conventions or the general living conditions which are respected and included in the guidelines by the CEFR.
