How to write the date in Danish

Maybe you already know the days of the week or the months, but in combination you are still a little helpless. The date is important for so many things. You need it – for example – to make a reservation in a restaurant, to arrange an appointment at the doctor’s or to get tickets for a certain event. In short: It is always good and helpful to know how to say and how to write the date in Danish.

The date in Danish

First of all, here are the most important words you should know to write and to say the date:

The weekdays to write the date in Danish

Mandag – Monday
Tirsdag – Tuesday
Onsdag – Wednesday
Goal day – Thursday
Fredag – Friday
Lørdag – Saturday
Søndag – Sunday

The months to write the date in Danish

January – January
February – February
Marts – March
April – April
May – May
June – June
July – July
August – August
September – September
October – October
November – November
December – December

And of course you should know the numbers, at least the numbers from 1 to 31.

1 – en, 2 – to, 3 – tre, 4 – fire, 5 – fem, 6 – seks, 7 – syv, 8 – otte, 9 – ni, 10 – ti, 11 – elleve, 12 – tolv, 13 – tretten, 14 – fjorten, 15 – femten, 16 – seksten, 17 – sytten, 18 – atten, 19 -itten, 20 – tyve, 21 – enogtyve, 22 – toogtyve, 23 – treogtyve, 24 – fireogtyve, 25 – femogtyve, 26 – seksogtyve, 27 – syvogtyve, 28 – otteogyve, 29 – niogtyve, 30 – tredive, 31 – enogtredive

Most of the European languages uses this format (which is also used in Danish) to write the date: DAY / MONTH / YEAR. Also speakers from Denmakr uses this format to write the date in Danish. By using this order you will get dates like the following examples:

  • 3. marts 1987
  • 14. august 2009
  • 29. december 2018
