The Certificate of Attainment in Greek

Language certificates aren’t only important to have proof of your language skills, they can also motivate and help you to reach your goals. Also as a learner of the Greek language you have the possibility to pass a language certificate.

The Centre of the Greek Language

Maybe you have heard of the centre which was established in 1994 in Thessaloniki. To be precise, it is a non-profit organisation supervised by the Greek ministry of education and which want to teach the Greek language in Greece, but also in other countries. But the most important part for you is the following: The Centre of the Greek Language is an examination centre for the Certificate of Attainment in Greek.

Which Certificates of Attainment exist?

Certificate of Attainment in Greek

There are six different levels of attainment which includes A1 (A1 for children 8-12 years old, and Α1 for adolescents and adults), Α2, Β1, Β2, C1 and C2. All levels correspond to the European Framework of Reference for Languages.

Format and content:

The levels A1, A2 and B1 examine four language skills: listening, reading, writing and speaking. The other levels – B2, C1 and C2 – have two extra parts: grammar and vocabulary.

In general, the content is of general interest and is meant for the general public.

Important dates:

The examinations are only one annually, in mid-May. So the registration takes place from the beginning of February until mid-March.

Certificate of Attainment in Greek for Professional Purposes

This language certificate is created for professionals who are European Union citizens, who want to prove their proficiency in the Greek language and who would like to work in Greece.

Format and content:

The candidates are tested at level A2 (CEFR) and the exam includes the three following part: listening, reading and speaking.

Important dates:

The exam to get this certificates is three times a year: in January, Man and October. The registration for each exam begins approximately two months in advance.

Certificate of Attainment in Greek for candidates from Vocational Training Centers

This certificates is organised in the framework of the a program called “The teaching of Modern Greek at certified Vocational Training Centers for unemployed repatriates/immigrants/refugees and unemployed persons for whom inadequate knowledge of the Greek language is a hindrance to social assimilation!.

Format and content:

The exam is at the B1-level of the CEFR and includes the following four parts: listening, reading, speaking and writing.

Important dates:

The exam is held at any time during the year upon request of the Centre for the Greek Language. To get more registration information the candidate should contact their Vocational Training Center.
