The International Center for Language Studies (ICLS) is located in the heart of Washington DC. ICLS was founded in 1966 as a private organization dedicated solely to English as Second Language (ESL), foreign language training, and international exchange and business training. Licensed by the District of Columbia's Education Licensure Commission as a non-degree granting post-secondary institution, ICLS has received institutional accreditation by the Commission on English Language Program Accreditation (CEA). Since its inception, ICLS has worked cooperatively with international organizations, government agencies, embassies, private companies, and individual students from all over the world, providing language instruction in English and over 80 languages. As one of the oldest and most established language schools in Washington, ICLS has had a relationship with its clients for many years. We train diplomats, government and military officials, business executives, international development specialists, university and college students, medical personnel, lawyers, judges, economists, and their families. ICLS staff members belong to professional organizations such as Teachers of English to Speakers of Other Languages (TESOL), the American Council on the Teaching of Foreign Languages (ACTFL) and NAFSA: Association of International Educators. ICLS is authorized under Federal Law to enroll non-immigrant alien students and has been designated by the U.S. Department of State as a sponsor of the J-1 Exchange Visitor Program in the intern/trainee category.

Offered at all levels, ICLS’ Intensive English Program (IEP) emphasizes speaking, listening, reading, and writing comprehension for individuals, diplomats, business professionals and university students who must improve their skills for work, internship, or university study. Incoming students are given a placement test to determine their entry level; English is the only language used in the classroom.
Our ESL program goes beyond our classroom doors. We provide students with information on housing solutions to help them settle into Washington, DC and excursions to museums, outdoor activities, shops, and restaurants to help them become more confident in their conversational skills.

For more than 20 years, ICLS has offered a TOEFL® preparation program that helps students achieve a satisfactory score on the Next Generation TOEFL® iBT exam. Class time is spent learning specific skill-building exercises, reviewing test-taking strategies, and practicing with simulated TOEFL® test problems. High Intermediate to Advanced English proficiency required.

Communicating in Business English classes are designed to emphasize speaking and listening skills to help students assimilate into a professional work environment. Focusing on a new topic each week, students will practice English skills in an office environment, at business meetings, presentations, interviews, networking events and internships. High intermediate to advanced English fluency is required.

ICLS offers a Distance Learning training option for private classes in foreign languages and English at all levels. For your Distance Learning training program, we will create a customized curriculum and select appropriate materials for your course just as we do for our individual one-on-one programs on site. Our Distance Learning courses are taught by qualified native teachers in a live, interactive virtual classroom. Depending on your specific needs, you may choose to take classes exclusively in our live virtual classroom or through a blended program of both online and on-site classes.

For professionals who need to improve their English language skills for the workplace, our ICLS instructors will complement the Intensive English Program by tailoring a program that introduces them to American business culture, including, language, etiquette, meeting and presentation skills, and more. This course is a combination of intensive English instruction in the morning and private classes in the afternoon.
We also provide students with a customized course based around their unique needs and individual goals, as well as language skills evaluation and testing, tools and advice for lifelong learning, and self-study ideas so students can continue to improve their skills beyond the classroom.
