About American English Language School - Orange County

American English Language School (AELS) is a language school in Brea on the border of Los Angeles and Orange County. Founded in 2008, AELS is accredited by the CEA and has since made every effort to find the most effective educational methods with the goal of providing the highest quality and most rewarding English-language learning experience for students.

All of our classes are taught by native English speakers and are centered around having a small number of students (a maximum of 8 per teacher). This allows our classes to be conversation-oriented, requiring active participation from all students and allowing teachers to provide immediate feedback. We also help students throughout their English language school process, from school applications to receiving F-1 visas and navigating local life. Last, the affordable tuition at AELS provides the most reasonable and economical choice for students, as compared to other academic institutions’ hefty tuition fees and medium to large class sizes.

AELS offers courses in ESL (English as a Second Language), TOEIC (Test of English for International Communication) and TOEFL (Test of English as a Foreign Language) preparation, Citizenship/Naturalization Test preparation, journal writing, book club, summer youth programs for international students, and more. Each quarter, we also host a Culture Week, where students will gain authentic speaking and listening experience through a discussion of American media and pop culture as well as personal experience garnered from guided field trips to local theaters, college campuses, local events, and museums.

The safety of our students is one of our main concerns. This is why all of our prospective teachers must get fingerprinted and obtain clearance from the California Department of Justice (DOJ) and the Federal Bureau of Investigation (FBI) before being hired. We request a background check from the DOJ which will inform us of any active arrests or convictions. This process enables us to protect our students, staff, and administration from unnecessary danger and focus on providing students with a great education!

AELS instructors are native English speakers with English-related degrees or TESOL certifications (teaching English for Speakers of Other Languages) with extensive ESL training and experience. All instructors at AELS have at least a B.A. or B.S. degree from a fully accredited four-year university. AELS instructors are patient, sincere, kind, attentive and most importantly, have a passion for teaching.

America English Language School is accredited by the CEA (Commission on English Language Accreditation) and certified by the SEVP/SEVIS (Student and Exchange Visitor Program) and BPPE (Bureau for Private Post Secondary Education). In addition, it is a certified TOEFL iBT and OPIC testing center and issues I-20 forms.

The ESL program at AELS consists of 6 levels, from Basic to Level 5. The final goal of the ESL program is to be able to communicate comfortably in all areas of English, including speaking, listening, reading, and writing. Students will improve their grammar and conversational skills. They take a placement test to determine which course level they will start with, and each level takes 3 months to complete. At the end of each level, students will need to take the level test again to see how they've progressed in speaking, listening, and reading. If you have passed satisfactorily, you will move on to the next level. Once you have completed the highest level (Level 5), you will receive a certificate of completion proving that you have completed the ESL program at AELS.

Reading, Writing, Grammar

AELS conducts reading and writing activities at each level. Students will become more familiar with English sentence structure and will be able to read easily and expand their vocabulary through the level-appropriate reading passages. The writing activities will allow them to write their own sentences starting with simple sentences and progressing to formatted essays. In addition, students will learn many English idioms through this process and will be able to use complex grammar rules, which will help them to speak English accurately and more naturally.

Conversation

AELS offers a variety of thematic and contextual conversation activities to practice speaking and listening skills that are used in real life. All classes focus on conversations between instructors and students. Instructors maximize learning efficiency by giving prompt feedback through constant dialogue with the students and correction of pronunciation and word choice. Through this process, students will practice speaking confidently and gain more listening practice through constant conversation. This is only possible with a small number of students in each class, something that AELS is proud to offer.

This course is for students aged: 10-70

Location Type: Town/City

Weekly Hours: General 15-25 hrs/wk

Levels: Upper Intermediate, Advanced

Class Sizes: Small, 2-5 students, Medium, 6-10 students

Exams and Prep offered: TOEFL, TOEIC

At American English Language School, we offer test preparation classes for the TOEIC and TOEFL tests as well as American Citizenship Test. Each class has an average of 5-6 students per class, and a maximum of 8 students.

TOEFL

Our TOEFL program is a 12-week intensive course that reviews the structure of the test, all four skill areas (reading, listening, speaking, and writing), and useful techniques to help you achieve your desired score. We work on one skill area each day on Mondays-Thursdays and finish the week with a practice exam that includes all four skill areas on Fridays.

TOEIC

Our TOEIC program is a 12-week intensive course (20 hours per week) that gives students an overview of the test along with ample opportunities to practice test-taking strategies for both tests: the Listening and Reading Test, and the Speaking and Writing Test. Since the Listening and Reading Test is the more popular of the two, we will spend 8 weeks focusing on that test and an additional 4 weeks focusing on the Speaking and Writing Test.

Students will need to either complete Level 5 of our ESL program or prove sufficient English skill by taking our placement test and scoring at or above the score our Level 5 students are expected to achieve by the end of the program. At the end of the 12-week TOEFL or TOEIC class, students will be prepared to take the TOEFL or TOEIC exam. These courses may be repeated.

American Citizenship Test

In this 40-hour class, students will learn how to fill out their Form N-400 (Application for Naturalization) and discuss their answers in a mock interview format in order to prepare for the spoken section of the test. Each student will complete a full mock interview at least twice. They will also practice reading and writing sentences in English to fulfill the reading and writing requirements. Finally, students will study all 100 Civics Questions and take practice tests on the information.

Since 2008, American English Language School has maintained an upstanding reputation of helping students reach a high level of English proficiency. As a result, we have formed special agreements called Memorandums of Understanding with accredited colleges and universities across the U.S. which allow us to set up a College Pathway Program for international students who hope to continue their education in America after completing our ESL program.

These agreements allow students who have completed Level 5 of our ESL program (the highest of 6 levels) to be accepted to these schools without taking the TOEFL® (Test of English as a Foreign Language) test. These colleges and universities may also issue a Conditional Letter of Acceptance (CLA) to students planning on attending their school upon completing our ESL program. Schools accept these Level 5 students because they recognize the completion of our ESL program to be equivalent or superior to scoring a passing grade on the TOEFL in order to transfer to their college.

Students attend American English Language School for much less money than most college ESL programs and get a more personalized and in-depth English learning experience. Enroll in our intensive English classes to improve your English more quickly, and you will be GUARANTEED admission to any college or university in our list of partner schools! The best school!

I have studied at a few English schools before coming to AELS, but here is why I prefer AELS and encourage you to start your English learning journey here.

First, the number of students in each class is small, between 4 - 6 students. The most students they allow in a class is 8. You will feel almost like you learning with a private tutor! This gives you lots of time to ask questions and participate in class to improve your English speaking skills.

Second, if you plan to take the TOEFL, AELS is the right school for you. You will learn English and prepare for the exam very well, and they have a guarantee program where if you study with them for 1 year, you are guaranteed a score of 70 or higher!

Last, the teachers are all so helpful and understanding. They always have such fun activities during class and are always there to help if you have a question. All of the staff are so welcoming and have a great attitude which made my time here so amazing.

Great school and great value for your money

I'm so grateful for this school for many reasons.
First, I'm very happy and amazed with how much I have improved my English since coming here.
Second, because the teachers and the staff are very helpful and always willing to give students great experiences during their time in the US.
If not for this school, I wouldn't be able to go to a college in the US or even be writing this review in English right now! The teachers are very focused on getting their students prepared for a higher education, which was what I was looking for when I came to America.
Also, this school is very affordable. The tuition is the same for all of their classes, beginning, intermediate or advanced, so you don't need to pay extra for taking higher level courses.
If you aren't sure what school to attend to learn English, I would definitely recommend AELS over any school!

A Great English Learning Experience

I loved my experience at this school! It was in a very nice location, a beautiful area nearby so many things to do. I liked how good my relationship with my teacher was - Miss Becca became like part of my family and she helped and supported me so much.
I also got to practice speaking in class so much! We were able to talk and practice English so much during class because we only had 5 students in our class! It took a lot of pressure off of us because we didn't have to speak in front of a big class, and my classmates became my close friends.
I recommend this place to everyone who wants to study English in California.

The Best Language School!

I studied at American English Language School for a year to improve my English speaking and writing. They offered such a great value for their courses! I was able to save money from their transfer student discount, and their tuition was much cheaper than my old language school. Also, their classes were much smaller, I only had 4 other students in my class! So I felt more comfortable participating and speaking in class, and felt like my teachers were able to give me more help and attention if I had any questions.
They were also very helpful with any questions I had about getting my F-1 visa and everything else I had to do before coming to America.
I would recommend this school to everyone!

Greatest college pathway program!

American English Language School has helped me so much to prepare for and get into college in America. Their classes and teachers were so helpful, I really learned a lot and got more confident in speaking English outside of class. I really appreciate that they have small classes, so I only had 4 other classmates. This made me less nervous to speak English in class and gave us more time to practice speaking every day.
The school's college pathway program helped me get into a great community college in California where I was eventually able to transfer to an awesome UC. This school helped me fulfill my dream of studying abroad in America and has taught me so much!
Thank you so much!
