This course helps students to improve their English language skills in the core areas of speaking, listening, reading and writing. The emphasis is on improving the students’ fluency and building confidence when speaking in English. We cater for all language levels, from beginner (A1) to proficient (C2) learners. Courses start every week and students are given a placement test before or on their first session to ensure they join the most appropriate group for their level.

Students can combine their General English lessons with exam preparation (IELTS, PET, FCE, CAE or CPE), Business English, Academic English and/or one-to-one tuition. Progress in learning English is referenced to the Common European Framework of Reference (CEFR) and monitored by continuous assessment and regular tests.

Nottingham Language Academy offers a wide range of General, Professional and Academic exam preparation courses. Our Exam Preparation Courses will cover all the parts of the students’ chosen exam in detail, focusing on exam strategies and techniques in order to help them excel at the exam. We will also provide our students with a personalised study plan constantly monitoring their strengths and weaknesses to help them succeed.

Students can join whenever they want and finish whenever they are ready to take the exam. Since it is an on-going course, exam strategies and techniques are repeatedly reviewed and reinforced so that newcomers do not miss out on vital information and tips regarding the exam. The same is true concerning the theoretical knowledge and practice of exam parts and individual papers.

Those who would like to improve their grammar and vocabulary knowledge besides their examination skills could also enrol on our General English courses (on a flexible basis, from one day to five days a week) and so prepare for the exam through two joint courses.

All those students who would like to enrol on our Examination Preparation Courses are required to do an exam-specific entry test, including an Interview, Listening, Reading, Use of English and Writing. The test and the interview take approximately two hours. All this is necessary for us to determine the exact English level and knowledge of our new students as well as their aims and targets regarding the date they wish to take the exam on. Students do not need to prepare for the test since its purpose is to paint a clear and realistic picture of their strengths and weaknesses, i.e. essential information for achieving their goal. With that information, they and their tutors can then start working for the exam, based on a personalised study plan.

Our summer school courses offer an unforgettable experience for young learners (11-17 year- olds) from Beginner to Advanced levels during July and August. They are welcome to book for as many weeks as they would like during the summer months.

Based in the stunning Park District of the historic city of Nottingham, our Summer School is ideal for those who would like to improve their English, combine lessons with exciting social activities, taste life in the UK, make new friends from all over the world and have a wonderful summer time experience.

All of our tutors are carefully selected for their suitability to work with young learners. The English level of our young learners is assessed before the start of the summer school through an adaptive online Placement Test (the Oxford Placement Test for Young Learners) which is sent to all our applicants during the booking stage. It is very important that all students complete the test before the course starts in order to be placed at the right level.

Our class sizes are the smallest in Nottingham (with an average of 12 students in a class) and our students’ progress is monitored throughout the course.

There is a residential and non-residential option. We can arrange accommodation with our carefully selected hosts, or our learners can stay with their friends or family. Whichever option they choose, our young learners’ safety and well-being is our number one priority. Our team of staff and Homestay hosts will provide a safe and caring environment with different levels of supervision according to the age range of our students.
