About Dulwich English
Joan McClymont set up Dulwich English to share her love of the English language and offer students the chance to improve their English while exploring British culture and living in a London family home.
Joan is fully qualified as a CELTA teacher and has many years’ experience of teaching English to adults and children from around the world.
“I love seeing people grow in confidence over the course,” she says. “Students feel relaxed in the home environment, so they’re more open to learning.”
“The courses are well-designed and fun. In the mornings, we learn about theory and on some afternoons we visit places around London where students can practise what they’ve learned.”
“Students tell me they enjoy this mix of theory and practice.”

Weekly Hours: Relaxed 10-15 hrs/wk, General 15-25 hrs/wk, Intensive 25+ hrs/wk
One-to-one home tuition is an extremely effective way to develop your language skills in a short period of time. You will be impressed at just how quickly your confidence grows as your English language skills improve, when you’re immersed in real-life situations and interactions within our friendly environment.
You can choose to have 15, 20, 25 or 30 lessons per week with your teacher, Joan (each lesson lasts 60 minutes). In addition, you will be given between one and two hours’ work each day to prepare for the next day’s lessons.
On the first day, you will be given a level assessment, a listening comprehension and your oral fluency will be assessed. Joan will then design a Personal Study Plan with you to fulfil your objectives by making the most effective use of your lesson time. Out of lessons you will have the opportunity to practise what you have learnt.

As the mother of three teenagers, Joan understands the concerns that a parent has when sending their child on a language course. They want to be reassured their child will have a warm welcome, a caring host and a safe and comfortable home to stay in. They also want the learning environment to be relaxed and friendly and not to involve lots of other children speaking their native language out of class.
Joan has many years’ experience of tutoring Young Learners and aims to provide a very personalised, caring service. We accept children aged 13-17. It is important that teenagers are motivated enough to cope with a one-to-one course and emotionally mature enough to stay away from home.
The course is also ideal for children who are visiting the UK prior to coming to study at a British boarding school or university. Living with a family is an excellent way to gain immersion into a culture and can also help out in exeat and half terms.
