Small class sizes: Get a more personalized learning experience. Fewer students mean our instructors have more time to spend with each student.
Personalize your learning: Teachers encourage you to connect to what you’re learning by sharing your personal experiences, giving speeches, conducting interviews, and participating in a variety of discussions with classmates.
Creative assignments and activities: Reinforce the skills you’re learning in class with fun and engaging assignments and activities, such as games, role-plays, and cultural field trips in the Los Angeles area.
Monitor your progress: Teachers regularly monitor your progress through quizzes, presentations, and creative individual and group projects.
Learning through a variety of technology and media: Technology and media are an important part of your daily life. Why shouldn’t they help you learn English, too? Instead of just textbooks and lectures, your teacher will use computers, projectors, music, news, and online games to keep your classes interesting, motivating, and fun as you learn English.
These benefits of our Standard ESL program help students like you succeed in becoming confident, fluent English speakers. Our program will be challenging enough to help you master English, yet personal enough to make the experience comfortable and enjoyable.
SPEAK ENGLISH CONFIDENTLY WITH OUR CONVERSATION PROGRAM
The Conversation program is different from the other courses at our Los Angeles ESL school, because the lessons focus on listening and speaking. Students will learn about main ideas, implied meanings, and details while practicing their new skills in discussions. Textbooks, interactive activities, and media supplement classroom lessons. Students in the Conversation program will take three classes that focus on different skills, including:
Communication: Learn techniques for delivering presentations, solving problems, analyzing information, and ensuring your audience understands your message.
Slang and Idioms: Master informal English by learning to recognize everyday expressions. Test your skills by participating in debates, discussions, and speeches.
Pronunciation: Perfect your English by practicing specific vowel and consonant sounds, as well as rhythm and intonation.
Additionally, the curriculum in each class gives students exposure to global and local issues while challenging them in role-play and real-life situations.

Every class in our TOEFL program is structured around the top TOEFL iBT® textbooks and materials available, while regular computer-based practice tests simulate the test conditions students will face when they take the TOEFL iBT®. At Columbia West College, we also want our students to take responsibility for their own progress by developing the ability to evaluate their strengths and weaknesses on the TOEFL iBT® test, so our teachers can provide additional focused practice (such as supplemental reading texts and audio exercises) on the areas of the test where students need the most help.
Together, these resources and techniques provide our students with the most effective, realistic preparation available. As a result, students can expect to improve the following specific skills measured by the TOEFL iBT®:
Written Responses: Ability to write clearly using appropriate vocabulary, grammar and essay structures.
Critical Reading: Ability to scan reading texts to identify main points and details as well as paraphrase a variety of reading texts.
Listening Skills: Ability to take notes on listening passages with efficiency and accuracy.
Oral Responses: Ability to give clear responses about specific topics within a given time limit while using appropriate vocabulary, grammatical structures, clear pronunciation, stress, rhythm and intonation.
In addition to improving these specific skills, students in Columbia West College’s TOEFL classes learn helpful strategies for test-taking success. For instance, our experienced and highly qualified teachers will help students to identify the different types of reading and listening questions asked on the TOEFL iBT® test and provide many examples of each question type. This approach helps students learn to recognize wrong answers quickly and take the right steps to arrive at correct answers.
