I have attended language schools in many different countries including Chile, Peru, Argentina and now in Spain, in each country I’ve gone to two schools for two weeks each. I also stay with host families, so I get a good dose of the experience wherever I go. I just finished two weeks in Madrid with Academia Contacto. I’m writing this review because I was very disappointed with my student experience.
I got a lot out of the educational part of the school, but total school experience was probably the worst that I’ve had out of eight similar experiences. The administrative staff was professional to the point of being detached, which was a first for me, most of the time school managers (and to be fair, to my knowledge there were no mangers on site) are charismatic and caring. The front desk individuals were very nice, performing routine administrative stuff, checking students in….. These people I am sure were caring, but obviously powerless.
This is a school that does one thing- it takes in students for a fee, and that it does very well.
This was the first school I attended that did not have anyone responsible for student activities. Each week we would receive a list of activities that were operated by outside vendors or “Meetup” web groups that we, generally, had to individually contact. There were no community events at the school such as welcoming parties or group activities. The most popular gathering place was the sidewalk space for smokers outside the building. I really wanted to get to know the other students on a personal basis – most people that attend these things have an interesting story and are very nice. When I made some suggestions based on my experiences with other schools, the desk staff was polite but disinterested. I was met with a look of amazement when I suggested a coordinator– as if I was asking for a basic change to their operation (which I guess I was).
I am retired and one of the big reasons I attend Spanish classes at different places around the world has to have an experience , sure I want to learn Spanish too, but I want to - be with the other students and school staff, as we experience their place and their culture as they see it. In this case the school did very little that I could see to support the student community, as a whole there was a total lack of passion in the operation (except for the teachers, which keep this place afloat). That said, I understand that the staff helped some of the students maintain their visas by enrolling them in classes, which of course benefits the school as well.
I guess you could say that I might be expecting too much when it comes to this sort of thing, but I have been around, this was not my first rodeo. I believe that a first-rate school provides a great student experience which includes campus activities or in this case school activities.
When it comes to my teacher, she was demanding, she had a great sense of humor, and she was a fun communicator - everything that you would hope for in a teacher.
Although the school is housed in the best facility I have ever been in - I would give them a D when it comes to the student experience. The videos of this operation portray a story which I found to be very misleading.
I am a retired project manager – the direction and energy comes from the top, I do not hold the staff responsible. I hope this was helpful.

Academia Contacto is a really nice friendly school. The class sizes are small which means you get a lot of attention and you can improve really quickly. My teacher gave me lots of confidence as I was really shy to begin with!! The school is situated in a nice area right between Iglesia and Bilbao metro stops and so is very easy to get to and Mario the owner is very kind and funny:)!! I would highly recommend this school if you want to learn/improve your Spanish. Hasta Luego Academia Contacto!

I´ve been taking classes at Academia Contacto From February till June. Because it is a small school the students from different levels became close friends and the atmosphere is realy nice. The teachers give you a lot of attention and since my class only had about 3 to 6 students in it I got the practice speaking a lot aswell! I would defenitely recommend Academia Contacto to others!
