The University of San Francisco’s summer Intensive English program (IEP) offers non-credit, non-degree coursework in English as a second language. The program is designed to help non-native English speakers improve their language skills for academic and professional activity.

Weekly Hours: General 15-25 hrs/wk
The Intensive English Program offers a serious intensive English language training program that stresses academic English and university preparation. IEP courses are taught by USF faculty in the Department of Rhetoric & Language.
Integrated Skills - reading, writing, grammar, and vocabulary
Oral Communication Skills - listening, speaking, fluency, and pronunciation in conversational and academic situations
25 hours of instruction per week
Courses offered at the intermediate and advanced levels
TOEFL preparation workshops and paper based TOEFL exam
Placement by English Language Ability
On first day of the program, you will take an English Placement assessment. The assessment has four parts: listening, grammar/vocabulary, writing a mini-essay, and oral interview and will be used to determine your course assignment. A TOEFL score will not be used for placement.

Special Programs
The Intensive English program can design programs for groups of 10 or more upon request. Past programs included business English, conversational English and U.S. culture, and English teacher educational seminars.

4 weeks or 6 weeks program.
Admission to the Intensive English Program
Admission is open to individuals who are 18 years of age or older and/or have completed their secondary school education. Courses are offered at the intermediate and advanced levels. Admission is separate from degree admission to USF and does not guarantee admission at a later time.
