College Prep Programs
The English Language Academy (ELA) at the University of San Diego offers an intensive English Language education program. Students are tested for class placement on six levels and learn English language skills in small class sizes.
Intensive English Language
Intensive English Language Program (IELP) provides non-native English speakers with specific English language skills for students seeking a U.S. university education. This English Language Academy (ELA) maintains a rigorous academic course of study, with a focus on five core skills and TOEFL preparation. Many of our successful graduates have gone on to undergraduate and graduate programs across the country.

Course Format: Classroom
Accommodations: Students stay in the university’s student residence halls. They are modern, clean and comfortable apartments, generally for eight students in twin-study bedrooms with two communal bathrooms and a living area. Each residence has its own reception area, round-the-clock security, vending machines and laundry facilities. Residential students have full-board which includes three meals per day.

Accent Modification Professional Program
The Accent Modification Program is a customized instructional program for people who speak English as a second language and who have average to advanced English skills. This program addresses the need for effective verbal skills in every profession. Managing people, sharing new ideas, speaking on the telephone, and growing a business all require clear and effective pronunciation. A strong accent may interfere with the ability to be understood. The ELA Program includes:
All accent reduction training conducted by a licensed speech/language pathologist; trainers have a Master’s Degree and are specially trained in accent modification
Training is short term and highly effective
Programs are customized based on the individual or the company’s needs and goal
Flexible scheduling is available
Individual and small group (up to 5) instruction is offered

Business English Program
Develop and Expand English Language Skills
This program is available as a customized version for a private schedule at your organization or at our site.
The Business English program is focused on building conversational English language skills to help business professionals comfortably converse in a business setting. Areas of concentration include vocabulary work, presentations, telephone skills, meetings and negotiations, business writing, socializing, and developing cultural competence in Business English situations. Oral skill development will include an emphasis on clear speech patterns for effective communication in spoken English.

Keeping up with the new terminology in the medical field is important for career development and advancement. This program covers a wide variety of medical vocabulary related to: diseases, symptoms, investigations/lab testing, treatment, examination, and prevention. The program will also address language related to bodily parts and functions.

Learn English in Sunny San Diego, California
The Summer International Conversational English + TOEFL/IELTS Prep program is a three-week international program for non-native English speakers to help them build English communications skills. You can select from a variety of courses to match your needs and interests. For example, a course plan can be developed to focus your English learning on one or more of the following objectives: conversational skills for informal settings, English idioms and dialects, vocabulary, TOEFL/IELTS, and American culture.

Youth Programs
Kids Have Fun in the Sun and Learn English in San Diego, California
The English Language Academy offers a residential summer program located on the beautiful University of San Diego campus. Beginning in mid-June through mid-August, non-native English speakers who are between the ages of 14 and 17 can practice their language skills in and out of the classroom.
In-class instruction; 8 students average- 10 maximum
Skill development in reading/writing and listening/speaking
Cultural Workshops, field trips, activities and social events to build new language skills
ELA provides two academically strong English language pathways with 17 hours of instruction per week. Lessons are integrated with San Diego and southern California explorations to local attractions, such as the San Diego Zoo, La Jolla Shores, Pacific Beach and more. In this unique program, student classroom experiences and the community provide many opportunities to interact with local people to reinforce both English language and culture.

Foundations in TEFL
TRAVEL and TEACH ENGLISH in the US and ABROAD
In this course you take the first step toward TEFL Certification and will be introduced to the field of teaching English as a Foreign Language in the U.S. and abroad. You will learn the foundational concepts in the fields of language acquisition, linguistics, methods of teaching, and what it means to teach English as a global language in today’s context.
