About University of New Mexico and the Center for English Language and American Culture (CELAC)
The Center for English Language and American Culture (CELAC) is a university pre-academic (non-credit) intensive English language program at the University of New Mexico (UNM). It is part of Global Education Office (GEO) at the University of New Mexico. CELAC serves students who want to develop advanced English skills in academic reading, academic writing, conversation, and grammar.
Our mission is to prepare international students and professionals with the language skills necessary to succeed in a wide variety of academic studies or professional settings in the United States and in English speaking countries around the world.
Highlights of Program:
- Academic Reading, Academic Writing, Conversation, and Grammar classes offered at 5 levels
- Full-time studies includes 20 hours of instruction per week
- Class times (dependent on level): Monday, Wednesday, Friday 9:00 am - 11:45 pm and Tuesday and Thursday 9:00 am - 1:15 pm OR Monday, Wednesday, Friday 1:00 – 3:45 pm and Tuesday and Thursday 1:30 - 5:45 pm.
- -CELAC offers small class sizes in order to assure a better learning environment
- Easy transition into studies at the University of New Mexico for qualified students who satisfactorily complete the English proficiency exam (TOEFL PBT) given in CELAC and pass CELAC classes
- Part-time enrollment in University of New Mexico academic classes while in CELAC is possible once students reach the Academic Bridge level. Must have a minimum of 500 score on TOEFL PBT test (or 61 IBT)
- CELAC instructors have substantial ESL teaching experience in the U.S. and abroad
- CELAC is a government approved SEVIS I-20 issuing program for international students seeking F-1 visas
- On-campus housing and meal plans available
- Access to campus gymnasium, student health center, library and computer labs
- Students will enjoy cultural experiences in New Mexico with beautiful mountain and dessert surroundings
- Part-time study available to students who are not on an F-1 student visa

The Center for English Language and American Culture (CELAC) at the University of New Mexico offers a TOEFL PBT (Paper-Based Test) Preparation course during each semester. Students that participate in the TOEFL PBT Preparation course will be able to take the TOEFL PBT exam at no additional charge.The TOEFL PBT Preparation course is available to all students or residents. Non-CELAC students are encouraged to apply.
