The Hawaii English Language Program (HELP) is a full-time, non-credit, intensive English language program in the Second Language Studies Department at the University of Hawaii at Manoa. HELP has a unique content-based curriculum that prepares students for further academic study. Students choose from a variety of courses at their appropriate proficiency levels from beginning through advanced. Students can select from classes on many subjects such as Science, American Film, Publishing a Newspaper, Academic Research & Writing, etc. We also have TOEFL & TOEIC prep classes. HELP's four 8-week sessions occur during the US university calendar: two in Fall, and two in Spring. Spring Sessions begin in January and April, with Fall Sessions in August and October. Students spend four days in classroom instruction each week, in addition to a weekly 2-hour online environment-themed course: GoGREEN! HELP also has two 4-week sessions in Summer, beginning in June and July. HELP students have many opportunities to meet University of Hawaii students by participating in cultural and athletic events on campus. HELP faculty are dedicated and experienced ESL instructors who use current teaching methods which encourage students to practice English for use in academic and real-life situations.
HELP’s Academic English Program is our main intensive English program (IEP). We offer full-time English courses in reading, writing, listening, speaking, and grammar as well as test preparation for the TOEFL ITP®. The curriculum is based upon current research and best practices in the field. We focus on preparing students for academic work at the University of Hawai’i or similar institutions.
