The University of Connecticut American English Language Institute (UCAELI) has offered English instruction to over 3,000 students from all over the world since 1990. UCAELI wants to help all students in pursuit of their dreams by providing high quality instruction and access to the university’s professional, social, cultural and academic resources. We are looking forward to welcoming you to our multicultural community of language learners.
UCAELI classes are student-centered and learning-centered. Because our class size is small (we usually have about 10 students in a class), students get a lot of individual feedback and support. Teachers work with each group of students according to their specific needs. We prioritize creating positive and supportive classroom communities where students have many opportunities to contribute their ideas and opinions and make choices about what they want to read, write, listen to and talk about. We help students develop strategies for learning English independently so that they can continue to build their language skills over their lifetime.
This course will offer a review of key English language areas and academic skills that are essential for law school students, with a primary focus on reading and writing. This will include regular review of advanced grammar and sentence structure based on student questions and errors, vocabulary-building strategies and legal vocabulary, reading strategies, especially those needed to understand legal cases, and writing in various essay modes as well as preparation to write a research paper. The course design will be flexible to allow for students’ input so that their language needs and interests can be addressed as much as possible.
