The University of Arizona - Center for English as a Second Language offers a high-quality intensive English language program. CESL’s curriculum consists of approximately eight levels of instruction, from beginning to advanced. CESL also offers English for Special Purposes such as Pre-Academic Preparation Program (IUAP), ESL for Professional Purposes, Teen English Program (TEP), Teacher Training (TEFL), and more. CESL is centrally located in its own well-equipped building on a beautiful, safe university campus right in heart of the University of Arizona. The UA is ranked among the top 10 Research I public universities in the nation. The UA was established in 1885 in Tucson, Arizona. The UA’s student body has about 38,000 students from 119 countries around the world. With over 110 majors we are renowned for our programs in optical sciences, astronomy, astrophysics, planetary sciences, earth sciences, business, hydrogeology, linguistics, philosophy, sociology, architecture, engineering, and anthropology. Highlights: Small classes with individualized attention and support. / Accredited by the Commission on English Language Program Accreditation (CEA). / Conditional admission to the University of Arizona. / Year-round sessions. 8 or 16 week sessions in fall and spring semesters. Summer programs for 8 or 4 weeks. / TOEFL and IELTS available on site. / Full-time immigration and student advisor available. / Campus activities and excursions to local points of interest such as the Grand Canyon.

CESL offers a wide variety of customized programs for groups of varying sizes. We can create a program that fits your needs. Our intensive and part-time programs are varied and diverse; however, we understand that business, industrial, educational, and other groups may have special needs that go beyond our regular programs. Smaller groups (2-5 people) may apply for a Course on Demand. Larger groups (6 or more people) may apply for a Customized Course or Customized Program. For one-on-one instruction, please see our tutoring programs.

The University of Arizona's Center for English as a Second Language's (CESL) is proud to offer the Teaching English as a Foreign Language (TEFL/TESOL) Certificate Program which helps prepare those who wish to teach English, as well as a selection of professional development classes for experienced teachers of English. Courses can be taken face to face or online.
Non-credit TEFL / TESOL Certificates
100-Hour TEFL (classroom)
1-month course, at CESL, for beginners, starts in June or July each year, 5:30pm to 8:30pm Mon – Fri and 9:00am – 4:00pm Saturdays.
50-Hour Basic TEFL (online)
2-month course, multiple sessions in the year, for beginners, essential foundations, taught online using the University of Arizona’s D2L system
50-Hour Advanced TEFL (online)
2-month course, limited sessions in the year, advanced coursework, taught online using the University of Arizona’s D2L system
50-Hour Advanced Grammar for Teachers (online)
2-month course, limited sessions in the year, advanced coursework intended for experienced ESL teachers, taught online using the University of Arizona’s D2L system
