General English courses start on any Monday and are available for any length from two weeks up to one year.
You can start school on any Monday
General English Full Time: 9.00am to 3.00pm Monday to Thursday, 9.00am to 2.00pm Friday
General English Part Time: 9.00am to 12.00pm Monday to Friday
On the first morning we interview you and give you a short written test, but don't panic - the test is not difficult, it is just to tell us your English level. After the test we put you into a suitable class. The teacher will check you during the morning class, to make sure that the level is OK for you. If you need to go up or down a level, your teacher will tell you.

Examination Preparation Classes
We help students to prepare for a range of examinations. Students can use their exam results to gain entry into further study, to improve their employment prospects, or for their own personal satisfaction.
Examination Preparation Classes offered are:
Cambridge First Certificate Examination (FCE)
IELTS General Training
We offer high-level, intensive courses for students who want to take an examination. These courses offer a highly-structured programme of study, resulting in excellent exam results, which can be used to gain entry into University and other higher learning institutions. Students who take the 12 week FCE course have consistently achieved scores within the top 10% of all candidates in New Zealand.
The Cambridge FCE course runs for 12 weeks, twice a year starting in March and September. For current start dates please see our fee information sheet. The FCE course is an intensive programme, involving study of exam material in both morning and afternoon classes. This course can also be taken by students who want to take the IELTS Academic examination, as it is an equivalent level
Students who wish to enter the exam classes must first sit a pre- test to determine their level. If their level is not up to standard students are able to take a course in General English. The length of this course depends on each student’s level, but we recommend a minimum of 12 weeks of study at this level, before entering an exam class.
For students who cannot partake in the above course, we offer our Exam Preparation Plus course. This course can be taken any time during the year, and combines a full time General English course with one-on-one tuition. Students can start this course on any Monday and there is no minimum number of weeks.
We have links with a number of high schools, universities and polytechnics, and offer a free placement service for students. Graduates of Mount Maunganui Language Centre have gone to successfully complete study at Auckland University, AUT, University of Otago, University of Waikato, Bay of Plenty Polytechnic, Crown Institute of Studies and Mount Maunganui College.
For High School, Polytechnic and University
We work closely with local schools to prepare students to settle easily into the New Zealand classroom situation and adapt to a method of study that may be new to them. We have found that our students achieve good results because they have gained confidence in a more sheltered environment.
We aim to fully prepare students for study at tertiary level in New Zealand, with a score of Band 6 in the IELTS Test. We recommend a minimum of 12 weeks study. However, the length of study depends on students' entry level and we have found that most students need at least 24 weeks to prepare themselves adequately.
Students will study the structure and functions of English language, in preparation for the Listening, Reading, Academic Writing and Speaking tests. Tests will be given at regular intervals so that students can measure their progress on the IELTS scale. New Zealand orientation will also be included in the course.
Graduates of Mount Maunganui Language Centre have gone on to successfully study at Auckland University, AUT, Bay of Plenty Polytechnic, Waikato University, Otago University, Crown Institute of Studies, Servilles Hairdressing Academy, Whitecliffe College of Art and Design.
We work closely with students, agents, parents and the high school to ensure that the best study options are chosen for the student. Our preferred partner school is Mount Maunganui College, an excellent local high school. We can also arrange placements at any high school in New Zealand on request.
