Program Description
ESOL courses at Lone Star College-North Harris are designed for students who are interested in improving their English skills, including grammar, writing, listening, speaking, reading, vocabulary, and pronunciation.
ESOL classes are designed for students who want to:
find a better job
take college-level (university) classes to study for a career
improve their day-to-day communication
ESOL Center Services Include:
Orientation - Students learn about all the English programs that we offer at LSC-North Harris, how to test and register for classes, & about schedules. We help students get their MyLonestar username and password, student ID, and parking permit.
Applications - New students are assisted to complete an application form, and their information is entered into the system.
Testing - New students are given the CompassESL placement test to determine their English proficiency level.
Advising - Students are advised which ESOL classes they should take at a convenient schedule.
Registration - Students register for their classes in the ESOL Center. (ESOL student cannot register for classes online). We help students decide whether they need to register as Continuing Education (CE) or as a Credit student (academic).

Our Academic ESOL program is divided into four strands: grammar, reading, writing, and oral communication.
The 5-level Academic ESOL program aims to prepare ESOL students for college-level study. The courses are divided into four strands: grammar, reading, writing, and oral communication. There are also additional courses available in pronunciation and theater arts.

Communication for the Workplace – Beginning-level English for life and work
These Continuing Education (CE) courses are designed for non-credit students who want to improve their English for professional or personal reasons without college entrance as a focus. The courses provide 4 levels of instruction from beginning to intermediate levels, and are “integrated skills,” including listening, speaking, reading and writing.
