The location was carefully chosen from a shortlist of over ten other possible locations because of its ideal combination of desirable features: social quality of the neighbourhood, security and safety, low building density and closeness to green zones, accessibility from and proximity to important shopping and recreational centres. The building was specifically designed to ensure optimal conditions for effective learning. Option 1 - Combination General English group 20 lessons per week + One-to-One Professional English 10 lessons per week

This course is ideal for students who wish to improve their overall competence in English in a group setting in the morning, when they can practise all their language skills through interactive classwork, while turning their attention to their professional needs in the afternoon. Through these private lessons, with the help and guidance of their teacher, they can work on bringing together their professional expertise and their knowledge of English, in order to develop their ability to function as experts in their field within an English working environment. As with all one-to-one lessons, the main advantage of this arrangement is that the individual attention of the teacher is focused entirely on one student, so the course itself is agreed by student and teacher together, and is based on the professional needs of the student, which s/he is asked to discuss with the teacher at the start of the course.

Option 2 - Combination General English group 20 lessons per week + Professional English group 10 lessons per week (available for minimum 2 students)

This course is very useful for colleagues or professionals in the same field who are of a similar English language competence and would like to improve their general level of English with other students in the morning, while focusing on specific shared areas of their professional work in the afternoon. Together with their teacher, they can establish the goals of the course and determine which gaps in their knowledge of English are most relevant to their work. This ensures that students come away with greater confidence in their general English skills and in their applied knowledge of English for easier transfer to their professional context.

Option 3 - Closed Groups 20 lessons per week (available for minimum 4 students)

This course is for students who would like to focus exclusively and intensively on their professional English with others of similar professional backgrounds, whether or not they work together. With its intense focus on a specific field of expertise, the lessons of such a course are an interesting and efficient way of improving students’ English as relevantly as possible to their specific areas of interest, as the course content and objectives are negotiated in class with the teacher, in order to ensure effective outcomes for all students concerned and guarantee the confidence needed to function fluently and comfortably in their respective professional environments when using English.

Teacher Training Group Courses

Our Teacher Training Courses (also eligible for Erasmus plus funding) aim to give teachers of English or any other language taught as a foreign language the opportunity to further their professional development as language teaching practitioners in their respective settings, whether among primary or secondary school children, with students from the same or diverse backgrounds, and even in a classroom with impaired learners. Whatever your training needs are as a serious teacher in search of self-improvement, we are sure that you will find something to whet your professional appetite in our selection of carefully structured and seriously thought out teacher training programmes.

In terms of methodology, participants on any of our teacher training courses can enjoy a combination of explicit instruction and direct teacher involvement. Following the format of a workshop, sessions are:

Interactive with plenty of ongoing group discussion and opportunities for participants to draw on their own experience and exchange ideas they feel are worth sharing;

Demonstrative in the presentation of teaching approaches, lesson planning and materials design;

Practical and hands-on when it comes to trialling some of the ideas presented in class, with the aim that participants will be able to take something tangible away with them (a specific technique, a particular activity, a general way of planning lessons or adapting resources, etc.);

Experiential in nature, so that participants can experience the content being presented and promoted (methodologies, teaching styles, lesson plans etc.) first-hand, from the perspective of students, through which they will be better positioned to make judgements on learning effectiveness;

Evaluative with opportunities for individual reflection, teaching practice, lesson observations and peer feedback.

Poor and unreliable

I don’t recommend the Gateway School of English. I have booked the Junior Summer programme for my niece, who was visiting me to stay for a week in mid-June. I wanted her to have an opportunity to attend the afternoon and evening activities, as I wouldn’t have that much time for her due to work. I have made the required payments for the deposit and the remaining balance prior to the start of the course. It took a little bit of nagging to receive the detailed schedule of the activities, which was finally sent out just 3 days before the course started. According to the schedule provided ahead of the course, the afternoon activities program was meant to run between 1 p.m. and 5 p.m., whereas the evening activities would start at 7.m. and last until 10 p.m.On top of that, there were weekend activities and excursions scheduled from 10 a.m. until 5 p.m.
The programme appeared to be varied and interesting. Unfortunately, on the first day of the course, my niece received an updated timetable, where the afternoon timetable changed significantly and the activities began at 3 p.m. rather than 1 p.m. This meant that instead of the originally planned 45-minute gap between the lessons and the activities, it was now extended to over 2 hours—so not very practical for a minor, living quite a distance away from the school premises. I was not happy at all with such a significant change, communicated at the very last minute. On top of that, some of the evening activities, such as sport night, took the form of simple wandering around instead of a game of volleyball—particularly disappointing given that 30 minutes before driving my niece to the pick-up point, I was informed over the phone that the game would take place. Then, the weekend activity on Saturday, scheduled from 10 a.m. until 5 p.m., finished a lot earlier—by 2:45 p.m., so more than 2 hours early—and my niece was already dropped off at the school premises, while I had to make an urgent arrangement to pick her up. Overall, this was rather messy, unprofessional, and very poorly communicated by the school. There are many other language schools in Malta, so consider taking your money elsewhere instead of choosing GSE.
