About Florida International University - English Language Institute
At the ELI, we believe there is no better way to secure solid English language skills than through our concentrated, personalized classroom curriculum... and no better way to practice those language skills than outside the classroom. We encourage students to interact with one another and to use English during social and cultural situations beyond the classroom during their stay in the U.S. Therefore, we would like our students to enjoy our city, our University, and our English Language Institute! Beginning or advanced, full-time or part-time, academic or vocationally-oriented, students can choose from different ELI programs that cater to their particular demands. In each program, experienced faculty members, many with overseas teaching or business experience, emphasize intensive learning in intimate classroom settings. Lectures, workshops and social events at FIU's lively campuses, and field trips to attractions in cosmopolitan, multi-cultural Miami and its environs augment classroom learning. Along with language training, each student acquires a comprehensive introduction to American life.

The English Language Institute offers two types of TOEFL preparation courses for those individuals seeking admission to American universities, licenses, certification in professional fields, or proof of proficiency for job placement.
The ELI TOEFL preparation courses are offered at convenient times each term. Classes are small to ensure personal attention to students’ needs, and instructors are trained test specialists.

The Intensive English Program is an academic preparation course designed to help international students make the transition to American academic life in a relatively short time through full-time instruction in English as a second language.
The Intensive English Program prepares students for the TOEFL® examination. Students are tested prior to the first day of class. Based on test results, each student is placed in one of eight levels of study.
In each level, students receive grades for written examinations, oral presentations, class participation, and out-of-class work. After completing Level 6, most of our students are ready to pass the TOEFL® and enter American universities or professional schools.

Our ten-week, accelerated, online courses range from level 1 (beginning) to level 4 (advanced) and offer a strong foundation in all language skills while providing students with lively, collaborative, and challenging language exercises and tasks. Those interested in taking these courses will take a placement test and will be placed in one of our four ten-week levels.
Our online courses are offered four times a year: fall, winter, spring, and summer. At the end of each term those individuals who successfully complete their levels will receive a certificate of completion.
