Our West Michigan Intensive English Language Institute (WMIELI) offers English as Second Language for students who do not meet the English proficiency requirement for their desired majors. Intensive English courses are offered at the beginning, intermediate, and advanced levels. Students are welcome to begin their English studies in the Fall, Spring, or Summer semesters, but all students who wish to enter the WMIEI must be present for the International Student Orientation.
Generel english classes are divided into four levels (Beginner - Level 3 English). Each class focuses on reading, writing, grammar, and speaking and listening. Each of the classes follows an integrated approach to language learning. This means that you will use all of your English skills in each of your classes. For example, you could be asked to write a short essay in your grammar class or give a short presentation in your reading class.
This course has been designed for advanced English language learners who have missed the TOEFL cut off by 25 points or less. Students taking this course will take two other Level 3 IEP courses and one regular course at Ferris. The Bridge Course integrates grammar, reading, writing, speaking, and listening into one course and focuses on how to apply those skills in the academic setting. Some activities students will complete in this course include taking notes, writing essays, conducting research, giving presentations, and conducting discussions.
This course has been designed to offer students a more intensive conversation partner experience. The IEP offers up to 4 hours of conversation partnerships for all IEP students; however, some students ask for more. This class is for students who wish for more conversation practice. In this class, the IEP student is partnered with a native English speaker for one-on-one conversations and participates in community and campus events. The purpose is to practice and improve English language skills AND to learn about American culture.
