The English Language Center (ELC) has been dedicated to providing English programs and English courses of the highest quality to international students since 1978. By employing highly qualified and dedicated instructors and by utilizing a dynamic and comprehensive curriculum ELC provides the perfect environment for rapid language improvement. ELC also offers students extensive local support services to ensure that their stay in the United States is culturally as well as educationally enriching. All ELC centers are also authorized test sites for the FCE, CAE and CPE Cambridge Exams.

Intensive English Program

  The
Intensive English Program includes sections A, B and C. Section A is titled
Grammar Structure & Usage and focuses not only on teaching students the
rules for grammar usage, but also on giving students the opportunity to
practice using grammar in both speaking and writing. Section B is
Conversation, Listening, Vocabulary, and Pronunciation. Students practice
speaking in English and listening to and understanding English spoken by native
speakers. Teachers also give feedback and special exercises to help students
improve pronunciation. Section C consists of two 50-minute lessons. Students at
the beginning level study Reading & Writing. Intermediate and advanced
students will choose an elective in addition to Reading & Writing. The
Reading & Writing component of section C exposes students to more
vocabulary (through reading) and provides them with practice using English in
all types of writing (from formal essays to formal and informal letters.) The
special elective classes offer students the opportunity to practice language in
areas of special interest and to learn English in an innovative and exciting
context.


Semi-Intensive Plus Program

  The
Semi-Intensive Plus Program at ELC is designed to promote communicative
competence in English and consists of sections A and B (described above) Monday
through Friday, and section C on Tuesday and Thursday. Classes are from 9:00am
to 12:40pm each day with afternoon classes from 1:40pm to 3:20pm on Tuesday and
Thursday. There is a 20-minute break.


Semi-Intensive English Program

  The
Semi-Intensive English Program at ELC is designed to promote communicative
competence in English and consists of sections A and B (described above).
Classes are from 9:00am to 12:40pm with one 20-minute break.


Part-time English Program 

  The Part-time English
Program at ELC is designed to promote communicative competence in English and
consists of your choice of one section of A. B, or C (described above).

Note: ELC Boston, ELC Santa Barbara, and ELC Los Angeles are
Authorized Open Test Centers
















All three ELC centers have been authorized by the
University of Cambridge to administer the following Cambridge Examinations: the
First Certificate in English (FCE), the Certificate of Advanced English (CAE),
and the Certificate of Proficiency in English (CPE). Students can book the
Cambridge First Certificate or Certificate in Advanced English preparation
courses and take the examination at these centers. ELC Boston, ELC Los Angeles
and ELC Santa Barbara are also able to administer the test to students who have
not taken our preparation courses as they are open test centers. Examination
fee is $350. Students wishing to sit for an additional exam during the same
examination week can do so for an additional charge of $175. Scores are sent
approximately 8 weeks after the test.


TOEFL Preparation Program













The TOEFL Preparation Program is designed to provide a comprehensive
study course for the Internet Based TOEFL examination, iBT, for students at the
intermediate to advanced level. The program consists of 30 lessons per week. In
the morning, during sections A and B the lessons cover grammar, vocabulary,
conversation, listening comprehension, and pronunciation. During section C, the
lessons focus on TOEFL test-taking practice and strategy, and academic skills.
Each of the four sections of the exam is covered in the course. Teachers
utilize ELC’s Multimedia Lab for both class instruction and test-taking
practice. In addition to taking practice tests throughout the program, students
have the opportunity to take ELC’s Institutional TOEFL each session. There is a
separately invoiced $115 test and materials fee that includes the book, CD/ROM
and one sitting of the Institutional TOEFL test, a paper-based practice exam
(at ELC).

Business English

ELC offers a range of Executive Courses for business professionals with
at least an intermediate level of English. Both small group (maximum class size
= 5) and individual instruction are available. Classes are professionally
conducted by native speakers of English with advanced degrees, specialized
training in teaching EFL, and business experience. In class, students focus on
developing communicative competence. Students are given ample practice in
conducting meetings, leading and participating in small group discussions,
socializing cross culturally, presenting data, and telephoning. There is also a
reading and writing component of each course where students review grammar
basics, develop vocabulary, and practice basic business writing. While instructors
follow a general business English curriculum, they also customize the course as
much as possible to suit the specific needs of each group.

Adult Summer Campus Program at Wheelock College


Offered only during the summer months of July and
August, the ELC Summer Campus Program at Wheelock College gives students the
opportunity to live on an American college campus in the heart of downtown
Boston while they study English with ELC. Students will live in a dormitory on
Wheelock College campus and have free access to its facilities including a
recreation center, library, bookstore, and computer terminals with internet
access. The dormitory has a spacious student lounge with a TV and DVD where students
can join together, relax, and have fun.
















Students attend ELC classes on the Wheelock College
campus in classrooms located a short walk from their dormitory. Students may
participate in the Semi-Intensive English Program, from 9:00am to 12:40pm, the
Semi-Intensive Plus Program, from 9:00am to 12:40pm daily and from 1:40pm to
3:20pm on Tuesdays and Thursdays, or the Intensive English Program, from 9:00am
to 3:20pm. Students with afternoon classes may have them at the main ELC
location; the course length can be any duration of one to nine weeks.


Wheelock College Campus Junior Program (ages 11-13 and ages
14-17)

Located minutes from the world famous Fenway Park, the ELC Junior Program
at Wheelock College offers students the opportunity to live and study at
prestigious Wheelock College in state of the art facilities.
