About East Coast School of Languages (ECSL)

Thank you for considering East Coast School of Languages, the 2010 and 2014 winner of the Consumer Choice Award for best language school in Halifax.

East Coast School of Languages (ECSL) is a private language school for adults based in Halifax, Nova Scotia on the beautiful east coast of Canada. Our students describe our school as a family where they feel welcomed and cared for. The school is owned and managed by three ESL instructors so students are assured of high academic standards and student-focussed programs. Highly motivated students who are prepared to work hard to achieve their English language goals excel in our supportive environment and small classes. Our caring attitude to our students and our excellent academic reputation have contributed to our outstanding growth since we opened in 1997.

We moved to a brand new purpose-built location with 19 classrooms in 2011. Our core ESL programs for adults include university pathway, business English, unpaid work internships, general English and TOEFL preparation. Partnerships with 13 universities and colleges provide our academic students with the opportunity to enter these institutions with no TOEFL score required. We also offer a Teaching English to Young Learners (TEYL) program twice a year. We are accredited by Languages Canada and Quality English, and are founding members of EduNova, Nova Scotia's education cooperative.

The purpose of the Exam Preparation (EP) program is to enable students to acquire the skills they need to succeed on standardized English language proficiency tests. There are two main streams available to students in this program: TOEFL and IELTS. Both of these tests measure a student’s ability to perform in reading, listening, writing, and speaking tasks in English. Also, both of these tests are used to gauge an individual’s readiness for success in an academic or workplace context; as a result, the students in these classes typically need an IELTS or TOEFL score for professional or academic purposes. Many of our students in these classes need a standardized test score for admission to universities—especially to master’s programs—in Canada and the United States.

The different levels of the program simultaneously combine English language study with academic preparation, gradually giving students the educational training, language skills, critical thinking abilities, and time management skills that they need to achieve their goals. When the students graduate from our final UAP level, they will be able to perform successfully at post-secondary institutions in Canada or in other English-speaking countries. Students who graduate from this program also have direct access to numerous degree programs at our many partner universities and colleges in Canada and the United States.

Best English School in the World!!!!!!

Are you looking for a place where you can have fun and at the same time learn English?
ECSL is certainly the best choice for you. I studied there for just two months and I had an amazing experience that I'll keep for the rest of my life.
A cozy place with excellent teachers, high-quality classes and a staff that is always in a good mood will make you feel at home and a part of a big family.
And beyond learning English you will learn a LOT about other countries culture, once there are students from all over the world. Not speaking about the huge variety of after school activities that they offer to their students.
Well, I have only good things to say about ECSL and if you are going to study in Hallifax, I highly recommend you go to ECSL. You will definitely learn loads of English and have an unforgettable time there.

What a great school!

ECSL is located downtown, within walking distance from a bunch of restaurants and pubs, besides the waterfront. Public transport is also very accessible.

I had the opportunity to study there for 4 months in the beginning of last year and I can assure you that, both the staff and the teachers helped me a lot to improve the way I communicate in English. In addition, the facilities are in great condition and the environment makes us, students, very welcome. I would totally recommend this school to everyone.

Love and miss ECSL :)

I took International Business Course at ECSL from January 2012 to June 2012. The decision I studied here was the best decision while staying in Canada. I learned many things in the morning and afternoon class and I still remember and use the things I learned in that class. When my friends asked me to recommend schools or courses, I've always tell them ECSL and International Business Course (even in Korea). I would go to Halifax and study at ECSL if I have a chance someday.
