Crown English We have two streams of English language, general and premium (English PLUS and English PRO). Each stream has many course options - English PRO stream includes EAP, TESOL and preparation for IELTS, Cambridge exams and TOEIC. Crown English has between 200 and 250 students, from over 20 countries Crown Institute We offer Certificates and Diplomas in Business, Travel & Tourism and, Hospitality; courses from 14 weeks to 56 weeks of study. Crown Institute has between 300 and 400 students - more than 70% of them are New Zealanders; for this reason, our international students have direct contact with local students all time.

EnglishPLUS (General English) Courses

(a) Standard course
Course content
A communicative course in general English, covering the skills of speaking, listening, reading and writing. Choose any length of course from 2 – 48 weeks.
9.00 am – 12.15 pm (Monday-Friday)
15 hours per week (3 hours each day)
7 levels (Beginner to Advanced)
18 students (average 14)
You should be 18 years of age or over on the date you start your course.

(b) Intensive course, mornings plus afternoons
Intensive courses are a morning class PLUS an afternoon option. Morning class is for 3 hours each morning (15 hours per week) and an afternoon option (see below) is for 2 hours each day (Monday-Thursday). On Friday afternoon, you can choose 2 hours of self-access study.
Afternoon Options
If you study an Intensive course, you can choose one of the following afternoon options (i) – (x). You can also change options during your course, if you wish. If you do not know which afternoon option you want to study, you can decide when you arrive at Crown. Afternoon options are from 1.15 pm – 3.30 pm (Monday-Thursday). EnglishPLUS afternoon options are subject to demand and may require minimum class numbers to run.

(i) Skills
Course content
Develops reading, writing and listening skills and grammar knowledge. Uses a variety of interesting and creative learning situations.
You can choose any length of course from 4 – 48 weeks.

(ii) Conversation
Course content
A lively option which develops listening and speaking skills, with an emphasis on fluency, communication and the use of practical everyday English.
You can choose any length of course from 2 – 48 weeks.

(iii) Activities Programme
Course content
A combination of educational and cultural visits, sports activities and a variety of classroom-based and out of school learning situations.
You can choose any length of course from 1 – 48 weeks.

(iv) Individual Study Programme (ISP)
Course content
A personalised programme for your individual needs. The ISP uses Crown’s multi-media centre and library, featuring audio, DVD and computer equipment.
You can choose any length of course from 1 – 48 weeks.

(v) Pronunciation
Course content
Covers all the sounds used in spoken English, with work on intonation, stress and linking. Highly interactive and enjoyable.
Courses are in three week modules.

(vi) Writing Skills
Course content
Includes letter writing and an introduction to essay writing. Recommended for students who wish to go on to Exam Preparation or further studies taught in English.

EnglishPRO

EnglishPRO courses are premium courses for students who are prepared to study harder to achieve their goals. EnglishPRO courses are different from EnglishPLUS courses in some important ways.

Each EnglishPRO class has a maximum of 12 students (average 10), allowing more individual attention from your teacher.
EnglishPRO courses have a higher workload. You will be expected to do homework regularly.
You should join your EnglishPRO class on one of the dates below, and you should enrol for the full course. If you wish to join on any other date, or for a shorter time, the school must approve this before you start the course. If you join for a shorter time, you must still pay the full course fee and resource fee.
You must pass an English level test to enter an EnglishPRO course or provide evidence of your English ability. You can sit the test at Crown, or you may ask to sit the test at your Crown retailer’s office.
EnglishPRO courses are flexible. You may take them alone or as part of a longer course. You can:

Enrol on an EnglishPRO course as a single, stand-alone course.
Transfer to or from EnglishPRO courses during your general EnglishPLUS course.
Substitute one or more EnglishPRO courses for an EnglishPLUS course.

(i) “X” Class
Intensive course
Course content
Focused study in all skill areas. Ideal for students who wish to progress rapidly to a higher level of competence. A high work-load course with additional homework.
Course length 6 weeks

9.00 am – 3.30 pm (Monday – Thursday), 9.00 am – 12.15 pm (Friday)

Focused study in all skill areas. Ideal for those students who wish to go to study the Cambridge First Certificate (FCE) course. A high work-load course with additional homework. A Pre-Cambridge course book is used for this course.

Mid Intermediate. Entrance test required.

(vii) Cambridge General English
Preparation for First Certificate in English (FCE), Certificate in Advanced English (CAE), Certificate of Proficiency in English (CPE) exams
Includes review of exam techniques and study of sample exam papers.
12 weeks (Courses starting on 5 Jan 2016 are 10 weeks (FCE, CAE) and 9 weeks (CPE)

Intensive course. Four modules of 6 weeks each.

(ix) TOEIC
Two-part afternoon course
Crown is an official TOEIC test centre. You may take the TOEIC examination at the school. Please ask Crown for details of exam dates, or visit our website.

(x) TESOL
Teaching English to Speakers of Other Languages
Course content
This course introduces trainee teachers to effective English language teaching methods and practice, and prepares them for the Cambridge Teaching Knowledge Test (TKT).
4 weeks Intensive course
Course times
9.00 am – 4.30 pm (Monday – Friday)
English entry level
IELTS 5.0. If you are below this level, you should follow an Intensive English course until you reach the right level. Entrance test and interview required.
Notes
The course contains: 100 hrs classroom study, 40 hrs supervised independent learning and 40 hrs self-directed learning. Trainees complete a portfolio of work. Assessments include practical exercises, tests with oral or written answers, presentations and assignments.
