The English Language Institute at Missouri State University is a progressive intensive English program which offers a state-of-the-art education to international students seeking to improve their academic language proficiency. Our curriculum is based on a communicative approach to language teaching / learning, and our courses are learner-centered rather than teacher-centered. As such, we view the instructor’s role as that of a guide, facilitator, coach, and mentor. In this capacity, instructors will allow students to shape the content and direction of courses as much as is feasible within the stated objectives / guidelines set for each class. In addition, instructors in our program will be aware of and take into consideration individual personality and learning style differences as well as other affective factors.

The CELTA course is a 120-hour teaching certification program which leads to the CELTA certificate, one of the most widely accepted TEFL/TESOL qualifications in the world. The course provides the skills, knowledge and hands‑on practice to follow a rewarding career in teaching, either at home or abroad. In fact, many job advertisements ask specifically for the CELTA.
Backed by Cambridge English Language Assessment, every CELTA course is taught only by people who have gone through a rigorous training program offered by the Cambridge English Language Assessment, and who have many years of teaching experience. Every CELTA course is checked by an external assessor on behalf of Cambridge to ensure the quality of the program. You can be assured that any CELTA course you would take would be of the highest quality.
While many other TEFL courses take as many people as possible, the maximum ratio of CELTA trainees to tutor is 6:1. This means you are guaranteed quality time with your CELTA tutor and will get the feedback you need to become a qualified teacher.
The CELTA is a very practical program. The input sessions are designed to give trainees practical teaching tips that they can actually put into place when teaching. While going through the CELTA, you will spend six hours teaching actual English language learners and will receive feedback from the other trainees and your tutor. Many other TEFL programs do not require practice teaching at all. You will also spend six hours observing highly experienced teachers in the classroom.

Today's universities and employers are looking for young people with high degrees of cultural competence and leadership abilities. The ELI offers a unique opportunity for youth to develop these skills in an innovative and impactful program called International Youth Academy, which is open to international and U.S. youth. This summer camp is held on the campus of Missouri State University in Springfield, Missouri, USA.
