Our school is located just minutes' walk from Princes Street, the city's main thoroughfare with its remarkable view of the castle. Here there is a wide range of shops, department stores, cafes and restaurants, a main post office and several major banks.

The Standard General English Course (20 lessons a week) takes place every morning from Monday to Friday (09.30 - 13.00), leaving you free every afternoon to join the Social Programme or study with our Self-Access resources. Your morning lessons are divided into two parts (09.30 - 11.00 and 11.30 -13.00) and you will usually be taught by two different teachers.

Every week your teachers will plan a scheme of work based on our Curriculum Framework, CEF (Common European Framework) Can-do Statements, the course book and your needs. We focus on all four skills, speaking and listening, reading and writing, as well as grammar, vocabulary and pronunciation. Learning objectives for the week are set and shared with students on Monday morning. These objectives are reviewed again at the end of each week. You will also have regular progress tests to help you review your learning and measure your progress. In addition, you'll have monthly tutorials with your main teacher where you can discuss progress and needs in more detail.

f you plan to go to university in either Ireland or the UK then you need to take the IELTS examination. CES will help you achieve your goal. IELTS is the most widely recognised university entry requirement in Europe. Most universities require a level of between 5.5 and 7.5.

IELTS Preparation and Standard General English Courses - 30 lessons per week

Students follow the Standard General English course in the mornings and take the IELTS preparation course three afternoons per week on Tuesdays, Wednesdays and Thursdays. If you are starting your course at a low level you will be carefully encouraged and monitored in preparation for joining an IELTS Preparation Course. The ideal level for joining this course is intermediate (B1).

Your course will focus on improving your level of English as well as on developing your exam techniques. At the end of each week, you will be given a test, and a complete practice IELTS examination during the last week of the course.

Students follow the Standard General English course in the mornings and take the Business option three afternoons per week on Tuesdays, Wednesdays and Thursdays. The Business English option is designed for students who wish to improve their communicative proficiency in a business environment. It can be tailored to meet the needs of any particular group of students and focuses primarily on the specialised language of Business English in the following contexts:

Socialising & Travel
Oral & Written Presentations
Analysing Figures / Describing Trends
Sales / Marketing / Advertising
Understanding Cultural Differences
Oral & Written Communication (telephone, faxes, e-mails etc.)

CES' International Junior Summer School combines expect English language training with a full programme of sports, activities and cultural visits. The morning lessons focus on developing the core language skills, with particular emphasis given to speaking and listening. Vocabulary and pronunciation work and integrated into each session. We use role plays, project work, and task- based activities to develop students' communicative skills. Students will be asked to research and give weekly presentations on various aspects of British Culture, myth and legend.

What is CELTA?
It gives you a qualification for entry into the field of EFL teaching to adults internationally. The acronym stands for Certificate in English Language Teaching to Adults. It is validated by the University of Cambridge Local Examinations Syndicate who set the guidelines and criteria for centres running these courses.


How long does the course take?
The full time course is a minimum of 120 contact hours and runs over four weeks. You attend the school from 09.00 to 17.00 and then spend most evenings preparing lessons for the following day. Cambridge recommends that a minimum of 60 additional learning hours for reading, research, assignment writing and lesson preparation is required on a course. This would average out to about 15 hours a week on top of contact hours.

Our part time course runs over 12 weeks and covers a minimum of 120 contact hours. The contact times are Saturday mornings from 10.00 to 13.15 and Monday and Wednesday evenings 18.00 to 21.00.
