GCSE:
GCSE English is a fundamental and valuable qualification to obtain. In some careers, such as teaching, it is essential.

GCSE English is a programme of language study conforming to National Curriculum Key Stage 4 requirements.
Emphasis is placed on personal writing, comprehension, response to reading and writing in different contexts.
It includes practice and assessment of speaking and listening skills.

No formal qualifications required. All applicants will be required to attend an interview and will have to undertake on-line initial assessment and diagnostic tests.

AS/A Level English Language and Literature (AQA):

The programme covers the study of both language and literature, with the opportunity to create your own texts. Language work analyses speech in different contexts, while literary work involves the study of three texts with analytical and creative responses.
This AS/A Level is for anyone interested in studying language and literature, who enjoys reading and creative writing and who wishes to gain a qualification useful for both employment and further education. The programme complements other programmes of study, contributing breadth, academic support and UCAS points. It can be combined with other AS/A Levels or a vocational qualification.
If you complete the first year successfully you will achieve an AS (Advanced Subsidiary) Level in English Language and Literature.

If you continue and complete the second year successfully, you will gain an A (Advanced) level in English Language and Literature.
Requirements:
Five GCSE grades A-C with grade B or above in English Language (essential) and Literature (preferable).

Cambridge University CELTA:

This programme can be taken part time. All programmes have input sessions on language and teaching methodology. These sessions cover the theory behind teaching and practical ideas to use in the classroom. Every day there is teaching practice where you will teach students who come to us voluntarily for lessons. The part time programme lasts 10 weeks 9am – 4.15pm on 2 days a week.

Each programme is individually designed by the programme tutors to meet the needs of the individuals on it. The maximum size of each class is 18 and on average is 12.

This programme is for people who would like to teach English to adults in the UK in private language schools and abroad. This programme is aimed at students with no previous experience of teaching whatsoever, or those who have teaching experience but not in EFL or ESOL.
A variety of teaching approaches are used: lecturers, seminars, workshops, discussion, pair and group work, video and computers. Practical teaching and classroom observations of experienced ESOL and EFL teachers. At least 50 hours of self-study is expected for reading, assignments and planning.

Assessment is on a continuous basis in the following areas: Teaching groups of ESOL students at two different levels, ability to plan lessons, schemes of work and reflection on and evaluation of your own teaching. You are also assessed on written assignments focusing on language awareness, the student, skills development and your experience in the classroom.

You will be required to come to an interview and complete a pre-programme test to assess your knowledge of English before being admitted to the programme. The recommended minimum age of entry on CELTA programmes is 20. However, applicants between the ages of 18 – 20 may be accepted at our discretion.

You must have a standard of education which would allow you to enter higher education in your own country. Non-native speakers need a command of English that will stand up to the pressures of the programme: we suggest Cambridge Proficiency Level or IELTS 7 because this is an academic qualification.

You do not need to have any previous teaching experience or be able to speak another language, although this may help. We also consider people with teaching experience but no formal qualifications.

You must have an awareness of language and a competence in English, both written and spoken, that enables you to follow the programme – this is necessary whether your first language is English or not. This means we expect you to be able to write coherently, using correct punctuation and spelling.
