The AEI is located in the heart of Eugene, Oregon, a beautiful, clean, and safe place to study and experience American culture. We offer intensive English instruction supported by teachers with strong professional backgrounds in ESL teaching methods. Our conversation partner program helps you improve your English fluency while learning American culture. The AEI’s activities outside the classroom are a fun way to experience campus life.

The American English Institute (AEI) at the University of Oregon (UO), is Oregon's primary liberal arts university since 1876. It is a 280-acre campus with about 20,000 students. The UO is located in Eugene, Oregon, a friendly city of approximately 150,000 people. The University has a strong focus on both environmental and international concerns.

Beautiful Natural Setting:
The Pacific Northwest area of the United States is known for its clean beaches, miles of scenic waterways and snow-capped mountains. The climate in Eugene is moderate.

Renowned International Reputation:
University of Oregon is a nationally ranked state university that offers a large number of highly ranked undergraduate and graduate degrees across a range of programs in Arts, Sciences, Architecture, Journalism, Education, Music and Law. International students are about 8% of the university.

Excellent Recreation:
Excellent skiing, hiking, boating, and camping are one hour east in the mountains; the Pacific Ocean is about one hour west. Many nearby golf courses offer reasonable rates.

Beginning Fall 2013, AEI is proud to launch a new scholarship program, Opportunity Scholarship for IEP Student (AEI OSIS), for conditionally admitted undergraduates in the Intensive English Program. For more information please visit: AEI Opportunity Scholarship. )

Features of Our Intensive English Program (IEP):
Fully accredited through the Commission on English Language Program Accreditation (CEA)
Six levels of language study: beginning through advanced
Four 10-week terms per year
Elective classes in TOEFL, Business, Culture, Pronunciation
American conversation partners for each IEP student
Advanced level students may take UO classes
Programs in academic preparation, language and culture
Experienced faculty with MAs, PhDs in Applied Linguistics and related fields
Specially designed programs in Teacher Training, Business, Distance Education
If needed, students continue to receive English support in writing, reading, and oral communication after admission via the AEIS program.

Conditional Admission:
Students who are academically qualified but need a higher level of language proficiency, can be conditionally admitted to the University. They must attend the AEI until they achieve an adequate TOEFL score or have successfully completed Level 6.

TOEFL and IELTS Requirements:
UO requires a 500 on paper-based TOEFL or 61 on internet based TOEFL for undergraduate admission
UO also accepts 6.0 on IELTS
TOEFL tests are offered on campus
AEI elective courses for TOEFL preparation are offered every term.
Students who successfully complete our Intensive English Program can also be admitted to the University of Oregon with no TOEFL requirement.
