Basic English Course

This summer from 29 July to 9 August, I took the Basic English Course at Lexical Lab in London.
It was the first experience for me and it was very interesting.
Andrew encouraged us a lot, so I learned many new words, how to use verbs, adjectives and pronouns.
Andrew gave us a lot of material for praticing and he was very clear in his expositions.
The visit that we maked out of the classroom with Andrew in the afternoon were interesting, because they were usefull to create a good relationship among students.
I suggest to everyone this experience.
Thanks to Andrew and Hugh

Advanced Language and Culture

Hi, last july I took the course of "Advanced language and culture" and i must say it was amazing and highly recommended. It was a different course where you can learn not only about current topics in the uk today such as multiculturalism, art, comedy but also colloquial language and expressions. I have worked as an English teacher for a long time and have attended lots of summer courses. This one was completely different and outstanding. Thanks a lot Hugh and Andrew for your absolute concern about your students, your high training as teachers, your sense of humour, your different way of teaching and your vast culture. And overall, thanks for your ability to make every morning lesson so relaxing and interesting. Thank you for your effort to make your students feel relax in London by showing us a lot of sites off the beaten track. I have been in London millions of times and have discovered different and enjoyable places with you. I took up this course without knowing how it was going to be,and has fullfilled all my expectations. To sum up,great ,funny ,optimistic and encouraging teachers. Interesting and different course and a varied bunch of social activities. Highly recommended!!!

AN EXCEPTIONALLY RARE CULTURAL EXPERIENCE

I took the Advanced Language and Culture course this July at Lexical Lab and must admit it fully exceeded the expectations I had. I have been a teacher of English as a foreign language for many years now and done many different kinds of teacher training in my career so I merely expected to update what I already knew about British culture and customs and improve my English skills. However, on top of that, it´s turned out to be a truly enlightening immersion experience for different reasons.
In class we were given loads of interesting information about different aspects of British current society in the shape of newspaper articles, videos, and PP presentations which we discussed and used as prompts for discussion and challenging lexical work. The kind of information we covered was always relevant, informative, up-to-date and thought-provoking, and with the level of complexity that was required- you definitely can tell there´s a lot of research behind it.
Besides, both tutors -Hugh and Andrew- monitored and gave us assistance and very precise and contextualised feedback at all times. What´s more, one of the things I enjoyed the most during the classes is that they even illustrated some topics with some personal experiences and views, which gave us valuable insight in order to bridge some cultural gaps and created a very empathetic atmosphere
As for the walks and the social programme, absolutely everything we did was related to the topics we covered or was culturally significant somehow. During the afternoon walks they took us to some sites in and around London that you would never know had any significance at all, had it not been for the information they shared with us. Also, The social programme was quite varied and I think there was plenty of choice for everyone, and the fact that the tutors were with us was definitely a plus because you have the chance to comment on what you have seen in class in a more relaxed environment with them and the other attendants, this way getting a lot of meaningful conversational practice which is something you don´t often get when you do a structured course. I really appreciated the tutors´ sense of humour and their helpful and caring attitude towards all of us in and outside the classroom - excellent professionals and really great people.
All in all, it was worth every single minute. I never had the feeling, not even for one second ,that I was wasting my time. Highly recommended!

Highly recommend!

This July I took the advanced language and culture course with Lexical Lab and it was absolutely-amazing-going-way-beyond-my-expectations. Here are a few why-s.

1. What I’ve learnt? Being an English teacher, apart from grammar and words with my students we do look at lots of cultural issues which are tricky to explain unless you know how it works not from books and the Net but from the real people who live this life. So, now I’ve got a much accurate picture of education, medical health service, family life, judicial system, youth issues, regions, how to act as a local in a pub (with practical lessons:))...the list could go on and on and that’s all packed in only 2 weeks! Apart from the information, you get lots of inspirational kicks. For example, after the session on British literature, I’m on the verge of opening 2(!) book clubs when I’m back at home! Or I’ve started thinking on the influence we have on our students’ personalities... it’s mind- opening. And I haven’t mentioned tremendous amount of new vocabulary I’ve learnt and I’m somewhere between C1-C2, have written numerous pages of new words and expressions.
2. Cultural visits. My parents, because of all the media influence, asked me not to visit areas full of immigrants. As it’s “dangerous”. I ended up doing right the opposite

Testing and Evaluation Course Managing Language Schools

I happened to take two courses at Lexical Lab plus personal suggestions and recommendations from guys on how to improve processes within my school.
This has been one of the best experiences I've had where we did lots of studies, socializing, cultural exchange and activities outside the class!
Personal thank you to Hugh and Andrew for their caring attitude, for creating a fun and nonchalant atmosphere and simply for making us laugh every day with their unique British humor which I adore!

Advanced English and Culture Course 2019

This summer in July 2019 I did the Advanced English and Culture course with Teaching Lexically by H.Dellar and A. Wakley in London ( Metropolitan University). It was a two-week course that turned up as a complete breakthrough to my career and personality.
There were about 15 students from different countries like Russia, Poland, Spain in the group. Every day of the course consisted of a combination of the class session and the local walks. There were also certain social activities provided for the weekends to hang out and get together with new students.
It was extremely interesting and exciting to learn about specific cultural issues in class like UK Stereotypes or about Regions and Cities in England. The tutors covered really complicated spheres like Education, Windrush and Immigration, Health and Health Service. It was challenging but it made the course worth studying. We were exposed to the variety of language use, how the language has been influenced by different political, cultural, historical approaches. One more reason that made this course worth doing for me was this lexical thing. Every class session ended up with lists of new vocabulary, phrases and idioms which are essential and to the point. This was that I took from the course as a teacher of English and I’d definitely share with my students. The topic that came as an inspiration for me was UK Literature. I learnt a lot about modern writers and current trends, new genres . It was great to share our personal impressions of the books we’ve read so far. We also investigated what social issues were hidden between the lines which was cool and really inspiring. Finally, what made the course for me were the tutors Hugh and Andrew, their outstanding personalities, professionalism and welcoming atmosphere they created in the groups to enjoy and learn from each other which was great!
The highlight of this course was the cultural programme and the trips we were taken to. The trips and walks were organized to help us penetrate the real atmosphere of London ( the city of contrasts), so we had a unique opportunity to see the parts that are not so popular among other tourists (are a bit off the beaten track) but rich in history, diverse population and which really have a peculiar image to Londoners, I believe. That’s Soho, Brixton, Bricklane and Shoreditch, Hampstead in the north of London (the place where we absolutely enjoyed the picnic and the view of central London on the last day of the course). A visit to the Old Bailey (the central criminal court of England) came as a bit of an unusual experience. We were given a chance to witness investigating a real criminal case. You could feel a bit awkward at times but it was a good experience as well!
So to make a conclusion I’d like to say thank you to Hugh Dellar and Andrew Walkley for such profound and fantastic course and great impressions. So if you are looking for a good company to have a wonderful time in London and a good language practice, this course is for you! I’d definitely recommend it to my friends and colleagues. And I am also interested in more courses with Lexical Lab in future!

Yulia

Summer school with lexical lab has become one of my best learning experiences ever. The two courses that I took (Teaching lexically and Advanced language and culture) exceeded my expectation. Not only did they provide an opportunity to improve my teaching skills and boost the language, but they also helped me to learn loads of surprising stuff about actual life in England, something that you’ll never see in a coursebook. Apart from classes, all courses with Lexical Lab include cultural program. You have a chance to visit off-the-bitten track places in London, go to popular musicals or even try Scottish dancing.
The tutors are awesome. They’re highly professional and supportive with an amazing sense of humor.

Lovely!

I had high (perhaps too high) expectations for my advanced language and culture course at the Lexical Lab, I didn’t necessarily feel the level was taught at C1/C2 (near-Native/Native) level – but that wasn’t due to the teachers.
I didn’t feel a connection to all the subjects per say, but following 1 week in a 3 week programme it makes sense that they can’t cater to all your interests.

I felt inspired for my own teaching aspects in seeing how clips and articles can be used to both practise discussion as well as vocabulary. I feel I could implement many teaching methods that were used in my own classes and can’t wait to try all this after the holiday.

More than that, this course has inspired me to look into a master degree and PhD where that’s never been an actual interest before. I would definitely recommend this course, perhaps more so to those who’ve not been to London (and its sights/museums) before. I look forward to a repeat in the future!

Many thanks for Developing Materials

I would like to say many thanks for Developing materials course with Lexicallab in August 2017! Starting from Day One, when we covered the main principles of lexical approach, then going through the general outlines and developing tasks for teaching vocabulary, conducting different types of reading and listening lessons, teaching grammar and finishing with issues and taboos when developing materials, Day Five – it was just a fascinating, informative and enjoyable time!
Moreover, the aspects we covered were backed with the practical sessions when working in small groups we had a chance to implement the ideas we discussed earlier that day in our developing materials on the particular lesson. Then our tutors shared their own views on the merits and drawbacks of the materials we presented to them with us, which was certainly a valuable asset!
And here, just a couple of words about our tutors – Hugh Dellar and Andrew Walkley. But for them, highly dedicated and competent professionals, it would not have been so much fascinating! Thank you for the time you spent with us, for your enthusiasm and experience that you shared with us!
Besides our effective and enjoyable time in the classroom, each day was planned for some type of extra-curriculum activities. Not only our tutors spent their precious time with us as students during presentations and practical sessions, we were just as lucky as having them as guides that entertained us - going for an amazing outing around the City, to the theater or picnicking. Can you imagine having a friendly chat with Hugh Dellar or going picnicking with Andrew Walkley? No? And guess how lucky we were…
I would highly recommend this course to the teachers of English, both for its academic and cultural program, and for the precious time with Hugh and Andrew. My dream is to take a course next summer and I hope it will come true!
