Established for over 33 years the Suzanne Sparrow Language School is situated in a beautiful part of the South West of England close to Plymouth's magnificent harbour and within easy reach of the city centre and the surrounding countryside. Plymouth is a vibrant modern city enriched with history and culture and offering a brilliant array of shops and waterside restaurants along with an exciting variety of clubs and discos for a fun nightlife. Excellent homestay accommodation meets the high standards set by the British Council and students are welcomed by the happy family atmosphere and treated as part of the family. The school is an authorised centre for Cambridge Examinations, TOEIC and Trinity Graded Exams with preparation courses in IELTS. Individual requirements are also met with specifically designed Business and Professional Courses. A full social programme operates throughout the year and includes cultural and sporting activities with evening theatre, cinema and pub visits arranged regularly. Full day excursions to Dartmoor National Park and cities such as Bath and Exeter are free to all our students during the summer months. Individuals and groups of any age are welcome all year round for Intensive English Language Programmes and cultural stays. Tailor-made group programmes are also a speciality. Our General English courses are designed to improve all of your skills in English. Morning lessons focus on grammar and vocabulary using a communicative approach, whereas afternoon lessons focus on speaking and listening, to further develop confidence and fluency.

Evening Classes
We hold evening classes on Wednesdays for First Certificate Preparation (B2) / Upper Intermediate General English. The course is 6 weeks for General English and 12 weeks for First Certificate. If you are taking the Cambridge First Certificate exam or you just want to improve your skills in general English then this is an ideal opportunity to develop your skills for the future. Join our weekly evening classes providing excellent professional tuition in reading, writing, listening, speaking and the use of English.

Cambridge Examination Courses
Our Cambridge examination courses offer intensive exam preparation and are designed to raise your language level in all areas: speaking, listening, reading, writing, grammar, vocabulary and pronunciation. The complete Cambridge courses start in January, March and September. Students are provided with a course book, receive monthly tutorials and receive a mock exam before sitting the final examination. Minimum age: 16yrs.
Cambridge First Certificate in English (Council of Europe Level B2) – upper intermediate level. Accepted by many employers worldwide as indicating proficiency in English to be able to be of use in many jobs.
Paper 1: Reading
Candidates are tested on their ability to understand, among other things: attitude, inference, text organisation features, purpose, main ideas, text structure, specific information.
Paper 2: Writing
Candidates are tested on their ability to write specified task types with a range of functions. They will be assessed on achievement of task, range of vocabulary and structure; organisation and cohesion; accuracy; spelling and punctuation; appropriacy.
Paper 3: Use of English
Candidates are assessed on their ability to demonstrate knowledge and control of the language system by completing various tasks at word, sentence and text level.
Paper 4: Listening
This paper tests the ability to understand gist, detail, function, purpose, attitude, opinion, relationship, topic, situation and main idea.
Paper 5: Speaking
Candidates are assessed on grammar and vocabulary, discourse management, pronunciation and interactive communication.
Cambridge Advanced Exam (Council of Europe Level C1) – advanced level. Accepted by most UK universities (including the University of Plymouth) and a growing number in the USA as proof of adequate level for courses taught and assessed in English.
Cambridge Proficiency (Council of Europe Level C2) – very advanced. Accepted by many institutions as indicating a level of near native speaker.
The examination content and format for CAE and CPE is similar to that of First Certificate but at higher levels.
TOEIC:
This course will help you to achieve the TOEIC score you require. It will give you the skills and knowledge you need to approach the test with confidence.

IELTS Preparation Courses
This course will help you to achieve the IELTS score you need to gain entry into a UK university. You will learn exam techniques and strategies as well as gaining a good understanding of the format of the exam.
Course aims and content:
Exam practice
Writing – planning, organising your ideas, academic style, spelling, analysing and correcting mistakes, clarity and accuracy
Reading – a variety of text types and styles, global and specific understanding, reading speed, techniques for dealing with unknown vocabulary
Speaking – exam interview task practice for confidence, development of fluency, increased accuracy, better pronunciation
Listening for gist, and specific information, exposure to authentic listenings and native speech
Examination content:
Listening – Candidates are tested on their ability to understand main ideas, detailed factual information, opinions and attitude, purpose of an utterance and to follow the development of ideas.
Reading – Candidates are assessed on reading for gist, main ideas, detail, skimming, understanding logical argument, recognising writers’ opinions, attitudes and purpose.
Writing – Tasks include describing, summarising or explaining information from graphs, tables etc or stages in a process.
Speaking – Candidates answer general questions on familiar topics, prepare for and talk about a particular topic and then discuss related more abstract issues and ideas.

Intensive English for Business and Professionals
Total immersion courses for individuals or small groups of executives. 7 hours per day on a one to one basis (group prices are available on request. All levels. Minimum age: 18. Students receive a needs analysis at the beginning of the course to optimise the use of their time spent in the classroom. All materials are provided.
English Plus Business
The English Plus Business course is clearly divided into two parts. The morning lessons are designed to help students improve all their skills in English through a variety of interesting tasks and activities. They focus on grammar and vocabulary with the chance to practise these through speaking, listening, reading and writing.
The afternoon classes focus on business language. You will be taught one to one and your teacher will conduct a needs analysis to find out exactly what you need to help you improve. Students can expect to work hard, but have fun at the same time, in a friendly, supportive classroom atmosphere.

A variety of teaching approaches and methodologies will be assessed and ways of looking at their practical classroom application. There will also be the opportunity to observe your subject being taught at a local primary or secondary school. Having completed the course, participants should feel more confident about teaching in English and have learnt language relevant to their own teaching situations.

Junior Course
This is available for juniors aged from 12 to 16 years old and runs throughout the summer from June to the end of August.
The course includes 15 hours of English lessons per week and a full programme of cultural and sports activities e.g. swimming, ice-skating, 10 pin bowling, golf, tennis, squash. Excursions to Cornish fishing villages, Dartmoor National Park, Tintagel Castle, Eden Project, Babbacombe Model Village, Exeter and other nearby towns and cities are also included in the programme.
All group activities and excursions are accompanied by a school escort.
To safeguard juniors, if they are placed in adult classes they are identified by the use of wristbands and their names are highlighted on the class registers. These students have more contact with the Student Support Team and are offered separate relaxation areas at break and lunch times.
