Sobre College of Marin - Intensive English Program

Welcome to College of Marin Intensive English Program (IEP)

College of Marin’s Intensive English Program (IEP) has more than 35 years of success educating English language learners. We welcome new and returning F-1 international students, and F-1 transfer students from other schools and local residents who wish to improve English language skills.

Located in the friendly city of Novato on the beautiful College of Marin Indian Valley Campus, Intensive English Program students enjoy small classes, excellent instructors, and fun, but challenging, course work. The IEP prepares students to enter American colleges and universities and helps its student to improve English skills for business and general communication ability, and also to prepare for the Institutional TOEFL and TOEFL IBT tests.

Our safe and peaceful campus with its spacious walking paths and magnificent oak trees has great natural beauty, yet it is only 30 minutes away from the internationally famous Golden Gate Bridge and all the excitement of San Francisco.

The IEP offers two 16-week semesters each year for F-1 students. Each semester has 20 hours per week total instruction time, divided into four subject areas of Grammar for Written and Oral Communication, Writing with Reading, Speaking/Listening/Pronunciation. and Idioms and Topics in American Culture. IEP students are placed into one of three class levels—High Beginning, Intermediate, Advanced—based on placement tests the first week of the semester. Each semester students progress through the program by completing all assignments and by testing into the next level. Students who successfully complete the Advanced level are guaranteed admission in the the College of Marin’s Credit Program.

The College of Marin Intensive English Program is designed for students who have had at least one year of academic English or the equivalent. Divided into three levels, IEP students are placed by testing, interviews, and writing samples that occur the first week of the program.

Level 1: High Beginning/Low Intermediate
Level 2: Intermediate
Level 3: Advanced

Classes meet for 20 hours a week, four days a week—either Tuesday through Friday or Monday through Thursday. Classes are small in size, with approximately 15 students in each class, to allow for maximum participation for all students in classroom activities. The program’s flexible schedule allows students to have classes in different levels, according to their individual ability.

IEP course work prepares students for the demands of college and university work and brings together needed skills and content for student success. In the skill areas of grammar, reading, writing, speaking/listening/pronunciation, students study current events, literature and American culture and history. IEP students learn how to use a college library, take lecture notes, write essays, keep journals and reading logs, and give short speeches in class.

IEP students also are prepared for the Test of English as a Foreign Language (TOEFL) and for further study. Visit International English Language Testing System (IELTS) Web site for more information. Click here to view the comparison of TOEFL and IELTS total scores.

Fun activities, such as field trips to sporting events and cultural/historical locations in the Bay area, add to each IEP student’s English skills development. Each semester students have field trips related to the course work and help students to learn more about what is special to the San Francisco Bay Area, one of the world’s top tourist destinations. Other events which IEP students share are holiday parties, traditional American holidays, such as a Thanksgiving dinner, Valentine’s Day Party, Halloween costume celebration, and games and other class play to make learning English fun and enjoyable
